DEV Community (also known as DEV or dev.to) is an online software development community created by Ben Halpern, Jess Lee and Peter Kim Frank.[1] It is visited by software developers who publish blog posts and discussions on topics such as software bugs and career advice.[2]

History[edit]

DEV Community started as a the "ThePracticalDev" Twitter account in August 2014 by Ben Halpern. The account gained notoriety by sharing relevant software development news and commenting humorously on industry norms.[3] DEV Community was founded as a company by Ben Halpern, Jess Lee and Peter Kim Frank in January 2017. In August 2018 the website's source code was released as open-source software.[4]

DEV Community received the 2019 Hacker Noon Noonies Award for "Best Dev Community", beating out runners-up GitHub and Makerlog.[5] As of January 2021, the website is visited over 11 million times per month according to SimilarWeb.[6]

Funding[edit]

In November 2019, DEV Community announced a Series A funding round of $11.5 million led by Mayfield.[7] According to Navin Chaddha, DEV Community intends to bring transparency and trust to the social web.[8]

Technology[edit]

DEV Community is built on top of the Forem project using the Ruby on Rails and Preact software libraries.[9] It uses PostgreSQL and Redis as its data stores. As of January 2021, Forem has over 15,800 GitHub stars and has been forked over 2,700 times.[10]
