Hacker Noon (or HackerNoon) is a company based in Edwards, Colorado that publishes technical content and builds publishing software.

Content published on Hacker Noon includes articles on artificial intelligence, blockchain, cryptocurrency, programming, startups, and software. All Hacker Noon blog submissions are reviewed by an editorial team.

Hacker Noon was founded in 2016, and is run by a husband and wife team of Linh Dao Smooke and David Smooke.

History[edit]

David Smooke registered the hackernoon.com domain on April 3, 2016. The Company was originally named ArtMap Inc., and published content in partnership with Medium before parting to create an independent publishing platform.[1]

On November 22, 2017 Hacker Noon published an article called “More than a Million Pro-Repeal Net Neutrality Comments were Likely Faked” by data scientist Jeff Kao which was later addressed by the Federal Communications Commission in a statement to Futurism.[2][3] In 2018, Wikipedia Founder, Jimmy Wales, was interviewed by Hacker Noon. Speaking about Wikipedia he stated, “It’s a misconception people work for free. They have fun for free.” [4]

In late 2018, Hacker Noon raised US$1.07 Million from over a thousand investors including a US$100K grant from Google.[1][5][6] As a result, Hacker Noon built an independent publishing platform to provide a paywall-free experience for visitors to their site. [7][8][9]

In 2020 Hacker Noon raised US$1.5M in strategic funding from Coil, Genesis, and GCVF with the intent to implement micropayments and grow the site.[10][11][12][13][14] Mozilla gave Hacker Noon an undisclosed grant as part of the Builders Incubator to make pixelated inline emoji reactions.[15]

Hacker Noon’s revenue model includes client sponsorships of various campaigns, platform-specific funding deals, and new technology initiatives.

Software[edit]

Hacker Noon has developed a content management system,[1] Slogging application,[16] and Noonies voting software,[17] Hackernoon.com works via the content management system. It is built primarily with Google Cloud Platform and Vercel.[18] The ‘Slogging’ application captures conversations which happen on the Slack platform and turns them into articles. [16] Noonies are annual awards hosted by Hacker Noon intended to acknowledge innovation and technology companies.
