Olayinka Lawal, professionally known as DJ Yk Mule is a Nigerian Disc Jockey and record producer from Sango-Ota, Ogun State. He is known for his single "Dance" which received traction on social media.
Early life and career[edit]
Lawal was born into a Muslim family on August 27, 1993, in Sango-Ota in Ogun State and grew up there, he obtained his primary and secondary education there in Sango-Ota and proceeded to Tai Solarin University of Education at Ijebu-Ode for his university education. He grew up poor and has always liked music. Growing up as a teenager, Lawal listened to Terry G, SideOne, and DreSan amongst others.[1][2]
Lawal began his career as a DJ in 2013,[3] shortly after his start up, he partially resigned and ventured into production because he was not getting paid with deejaying at the time. According to him, he learnt everything he knows about music on YouTube. After he found success with "Dance" which was released in 2017 and was widely listened to in Nigeria and across, he started performing at concerts and has performed at concerts headlined by Mr Eazi, Mayorkun, and Reekado Banks.[4]
As of 2022, his hashtags #DJYK and #DJYKbeats have amassed over 14 million streams and 50.5 million streams on TikTok respectively.[5] In 2023, Lawal won Best DJ at the 2023 Beatz Awards.[6]
