"Daddy Cop" is a single by Zander Hawley that was written for his father Alexi Hawley's television show The Rookie. The song first appeared in the season five episode, "Daddy Cop", as a skit for the cold open of the episode which had fans wanting a full-length version.[1] The song was released on to streaming platforms on 28 February 2024, the day after the 100th episode of the show. Since the song was first shown in The Rookie it has been popular with fans and some critics where it has also expanded Hawley into becoming recurring character Rodge Bronson from Season Seven onwards.
Background
After being a comedic skit during a fifth episode of The Rookie, fans wanted a full version of the song which was then released for the sixth-season episode "The Hammer".[1] During the first time the song was featured, Hawley's character, Rodge Bronson, was singing the song about series lead John Nolan, played by Nathan Fillion.
When discussing the song in an interview with Screen Rant, Hawley had said "Yeah, it's funny. I was in the I was in the middle of putting out my saddest ever album when that episode aired [laughs]. When I wrote that song and we filmed it. I thought it was a 3-second joke. I thought it was funny and I was very proud of it, but I wasn't expecting, really anything beyond I thought filming it and being in the show, which was amazing. That was the whole sundae and the cherry on top, but then when it sort of began to become what it's become."[2] Hawley then added "Initially, I was, of course, annoyed because I was like, "Listen to my sadness and listen to my soul [in my own music]." But what it actually ended up doing was it really showed me that people were open to me putting my my whole personality into my songs across the board. So it really, you know, I think I'd always felt like I had to be the sort of sensitive folk musician that I looked up to when I was starting writing. Because of the song, I felt I was allowed to have ownership over that side of myself. It was so far in the other direction, to the other extreme that it let me know, okay, people can, not only can handle you putting more of your whole personality into this, but they are interested, and they prefer it, which then sort of opened up my writing style for my own music."[2]

Reception
In a review for a later episode Hawley appeared in, the song was called “TikTok famous”.[3] Another review by Marisa Roffman called the song “ridiculously catchy”.[4]
Rachel Foertsch mentioned in a Screen Rant article how the song is “beloved by fans”.[5]
Jennie Richardson from Collider said "All fans of The Rookie know the song by now: "Cop cuties, cute and on duty, navy blue booties, go ahead and lock me up..." The song was first introduced in the Season 5 Episode, "Daddy Cop," named after that very tune."[6] Richardson added "The Rookie's "Daddy Cop" bit started off unbelievably strong. It is a very catchy and specific song, and it was so much fun to hear it both times and to see Nolan become irrationally angry in response to it each time. The second version of the song built off of the existing joke without running it into the ground."[6]
The scene where the song made its debut was ranked number 1 in a list of the top 10 cold opens of the show where reviewer Katrina Yang wrote "Their lyrics are flirtatious and hilarious."[7]
