"Deru Debu" (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.), also known as "Deru dan Debu" (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.), is the song written, composed, and arranged by Indonesian musician and record producer Dwiki Dharmawan for the 1994 television series of the same name. Ita Purnamasari recorded the demo of the song in December of that year. A single version, sung by Nike Ardilla in 1995 for her final studio album Sandiwara Cinta, was also popular.

Upon its release, "Deru Debu" was widely panned by critics, who deemed it as a career highlight for Nike. It was also included in the compilation album Collaborating Harmony: Dwiki Dharmawan, performed by Margareth Siagian and released in 2014, marking the first time that the song included on a Dwiki tribute release as part of his thirtieth anniversary celebration.

Background

In 2021, Purnamasari revealed that she has trained singer Nike Ardilla, before recording her vocals for the song in 1994. However, Purnamasari recorded a demo of the song before being sung by Nike sometime later.[1]

Critical reception

"Deru Debu" was met with positive reviews from critics. The Jakarta Post praised it as one of the soundtracks that made their way to the market.[2] Liputan 6 reviewed "Deru Debu" as a "serious" soundtrack ever created.[3] Hernowo Anggie of Liputan 6 wrote that the song was popular among people in the 1990s.[4] Tempo deemed "Deru Debu" as a boost for Nike's popularity, despite not starred in the series.[5] Riana A. Ibrahim of Kompas wrote that the song was popularized through Nike's "iconic"[lower-alpha 1] voice.[6] Writing for Sindonews, the song is described as both a "masterpiece" and a blessing for Zoe Jireh.[7]

Awards

At the 1995 HDX Awards, Nike won the Best Single category for the song.[5]

In 2021, Purnamasari covered "Deru Debu" with then thirteen-year-old Indonesian singer and actress Zoe Jireh.[6] An accompanying music video for their own version released on October 1 through HP Music's YouTube channel, and was directed by Jhan Saputra. According to the song's composer, Dwiki, stated that the Purnamasari/Jireh version of "Deru Debu" would bring back the memories of Nike's fans,[8] while it was described as "a new, exciting song" for the next generation of listeners.[6] At the 2021 AMI Awards, their own version of "Deru Debu" was nominated for Best Pop Music Arrangement, Best Collaborative Production Work and Best Production Work for Remake.[9]
