Dale Neuburger is an American sports administrator and official, best known for his long service with World Aquatics (formerly FINA) and leadership roles in U.S. swimming organizations. He has overseen international swimming competitions at multiple Olympic Games, expanded aquatic sport development worldwide, and served as president of USA Swimming and United States Aquatic Sports.

Early life and education

Neuburger grew up near Buffalo, New York. He attended Williston Academy, where he swam competitively under coach Wilmot Babcock.[1] He went on to Princeton University, where he earned varsity letters in swimming.[2]

Career

Coaching and early administration

Neuburger began his career coaching club and high school swim teams in Buffalo. He later served as Assistant Coach for Syracuse University’s men’s and women’s swimming programs.[2] In 1979, he became Aquatics Director for the Syracuse City School District, where he oversaw multiple public aquatic facilities.[2]

USA Swimming and national leadership

Neuburger joined the board of USA Swimming and rose to national leadership positions. From 1998 to 2002 he was president of both USA Swimming and United States Aquatic Sports.[3] He also helped organize major U.S. competitions, including securing the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Swimming in Indianapolis and supporting the city’s bid for the 2004 Short Course World Championships.[3]

World Aquatics

Elected in 2000 as the United States’ representative to World Aquatics, Neuburger has since become one of its longest-serving officials.[4] He served multiple terms as Vice President and, since 2022, as Treasurer of the organization.[5] As a technical delegate, he supervised swimming competitions at five Olympic Games.[2]

Awards and recognition

  • Inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame (Class of 2024).[2]
  • Recipient of the George M. Steinbrenner III Sport Leadership Award (2023), presented by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Endowment.[6]

Personal life

Neuburger lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, with his wife Heidi. They have two children, Eric and Karen.[2]
