Dami (Damilola) Okulaja a.k.a Damiereel is a Nigerian American documentary filmmaker, and photojournalist. He is the Personal Videographer to the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who plays a strategic role in the portrayal and visual communications of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. His work and contributions have been published on local and international magazines, newspapers and television networks, including Channels, NTA, TVC, AIT, BBC, MTV and Channel O.
Occasionally, Okulaja acts as a motivational speaker for Primary and Secondary School pupils.
Early Life[edit]
Okulaja was born on November 13, 1992 in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised both in Lagos, Nigeria and Chicago, IL. Born from a single mother, as an only child, Okulaja had to learn to remain self driven and result oriented, hence training himself in photography and finding a passion for cinematography.
On arriving to the States in 2006, Okulaja attended Conserve School in Wisconsin, where he was the only African student, upon feeling uncomfortable being in photographs, he took it upon himself to always document school events in order to avoid the cameras, this behavior transcended to family events, where he was always the official photographer, and never seen in family function photographs.
Education[edit]
He was educated at Corona Primary School, in Lagos. Thereafter, he attended Conserve School[1], Wisconsin (2006-2007) St. Joseph High School, (Westchester, Illinois)[2] (2007-2010) where he was the recipient of President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement (2010)[3]; The Photojournalism Award (2010).
He graduated with a BA in Cinema Arts + Sciences in 2015 from Columbia College Chicago[4], an independent, non-profit liberal arts college specializing in arts and media disciplines.
Career[edit]
Prior to his current work as Personal Videographer to the Vice President of Nigeria, Okulaja formed an advocacy group with his childhood friend and singer Timix (Timilehin Ajayi) called A New Tribe; an advocacy group that pushes for Unity in Diversity within Nigeria, a country where over 200 tribes are represented.
Before this, Okulaja served as the Creative Director to Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer Davido from 2010[5] to 2015 where he supported in managing day-to-day content creation and projections of the artist on traditional and new media. Okulaja also supervised quality control over film concepts and projects.
