John Thomas Mateer (born December 4, 1995) is an American filmmaker and podcaster.[1]
Mateer was born on December 4, 1995, in the village of Mineola, New York.[1]
At the age of 16, Mateer recorded a video of the destruction to his home in Long Island during Hurricane Sandy, amassing over one million views on YouTube.[2][3] Despite the video capturing the devastating effects of a natural disaster, the video was most notable for its unintentional comedic value due to Mateer and his family’s off-screen commentary.[4] In a televised interview with Mateer, Katie Couric described the video as “a terrifying situation..” following up lightheartedly with, “.. but I do like your color commentary!”[5] The video received global attention and found Mateer featured in numerous television shows and documentaries. [6][7][8]
In October 2015, during a fraternity party at the Penn State University Sigma Nu house, Mateer was assaulted by a fellow party-goer after Mateer revealed he was gay.[9] Mateer posted photos of his injuries on his Twitter along with the statement, “Don’t let a frat guy know that you’re gay,” and the crime quickly went viral across the internet.[10][11][12] Despite Mateer's initial claims, Matthew Chandlee (his attacker), was not a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.[13] However, Chandlee being charged with summary harassment and simple assault (both misdemeanors) instead of a hate crime, caused major controversy and sparked a national discussion about the lack of protections for LGBT people in certain jurisdictions within the United States.[14] The ensuing backlash stemmed mainly from the state of Pennsylvania’s lack of protection of LGBT people under their hate crime laws.[15][16]
Currently, Mateer stars in the thriller podcast, John Mateer’s METRONOME, which is also created by Mateer. [17][18]
