Daniel Rivera is an American businessman and politician. He is the 59th mayor of Lawrence, Massachusetts, having held office since January 4, 2014.

Early life and education[edit]

Dan was born in The Bronx to a single mother who emigrated from the Dominican Republic. His family moved to Lawrence when he was five years old. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1989.[2] After high school Dan joined the United States Army and was a Military Police Officer in Germany. He was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait during Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. Upon his return home, Dan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a master's degree in Business Administration from Suffolk University.[3]

Dan worked as economic development coordinator for Congressman Marty Meehan, later joining the private sector for a career in marketing. He has worked as a database marketing manager for Birddog Solutions Inc., a marketing manager for Aspentech, a marketing manager for Philips Lifeline.,[3][4] a Project Manager for the Stadium Courts, Lawrence Housing Authority,[5] a Program Manager for the Catholic Charities Lawrence[6] and has worked as a Coordinator for Mauricio Gaston Institute, UMass Boston.[7]

Rivera has served as a member of the Colonial Heights Neighborhood Association, Prospect Hill Neighborhood Association, Mount Vernon Neighborhood Association, Lawrence Boys and Girls Club,[8] Platform Committee Member of Massachusetts Democratic State Party,[9] Past Co-Chair of the Lawrence Democratic City Committee,[10] Site Captain for Groundwork Lawrence's Annual Spicket River Clean Up,[11] Advisory Board Member for Family Service Inc.,[12] past Board President of Hope Street Youth Center and Treasurer for the Lawrence Youth Development Organization.[13][7]

Political career[edit]

Rivera served on the Lawrence City Council from 2010 to 2014. He was elected Mayor of Lawrence in 2013, and took office on January 4, 2014 with Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren administering the oath of office.[14][15][16]

City Council[edit]

Rivera previously served as an At Large City Councilor. He was elected Vice President of the Council during his second term and has chaired the Budget and Finance Committee for the past three years. Rivera is a member of the Board of Trustees for Northern Essex Community College where he plays a supporting role in the expansion of the College's Lawrence Campus.

Gas Explosion[edit]

Improperly maintained gas lines led to a gas explosion in Lawrence on September 13, 2018 damaging many commercial building and residences. As the Mayor of Lawrence Dan Rivera assisted in emergency relief and recovery operations.Mayor Rivera also sought and helped to receive a settlement for the injured parties and the city of Lawrence.[17]
