Dan Ward (born 30 September 1997) is an Irish professional footballer who plays for League of Ireland Premier Division club, St Patrick's Athletic, having previously played for Newcastle United, Middlesbrough and Spennymoor Town.

Club career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Raised in South Shields in County Durham in the North of England, Ward began playing football with his local side South Shields F.C.[1] before moving on to Seaham Red Star, where he earned a move to Newcastle United, officially signing for the club as a scholar on the 11th June 2014.[2]

Newcastle United[edit]

On the 9th July 2017, he signed the first professional contract of his career, signing a 2 year deal with Newcastle United, alongside several of his youth team teammates that had been scholars together at the club, including Sean Longstaff.[3][4] He made his debut for Newcastle United on the 7th November 2017 in a 4–1 defeat away to Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park in an EFL Trophy game.[5] He was released by Newcastle in the summer of 2018 along with Yasin Ben El-Mhanni, Kyle Cameron, Stuart Findlay, Macaulay Gillesphey and 13 more of his other teammates.[6]

Middlesbrough[edit]

Ward signed a 1 year contract with Middlesbrough ahead of the 2019–19 season under Tony Pulis.[7][8][9] His first team debut was on the 9th of October 2018 in an EFL Trophy fixture away to Walsall, scoring his first goal in senior football in a 3–1 loss for his side.[10] He also played in EFL Trophy games away to Port Vale[11] and a 1–0 win away to Burton Albion.[12] It was announced in April 2019 that Ward was one of four players set to be released at the end of the season.[13][14]

Spennymoor Town[edit]

Upon the end of his contract at Middlesbrough, Ward signed for National League North side Spennymoor Town on the 21st June 2019.[15] He made his debut on the 3rd August 2019 in a 2–2 draw away to Hereford on the opening day of the season.[16] He made the first FA Cup appearance of his career on the 5th October 2019 in a 6–2 win away to Ashton United.[17] On the 31st December 2019, Spennymoor announced that Ward had left the club after 16 appearances[18] in all competitions to return to full time professional football with League of Ireland Premier Division side St Patrick's Athletic.[19][20]

St Patrick's Athletic[edit]

It was announced on the 8th January 2020 that Ward had signed for St Patrick's Athletic, having impressed manager Stephen O'Donnell who watched him playing for Spennymoor Town.[21]
