Dana Distortion Yavin

Dana Distortion Yavin is a photographer, film director, entrepreneur and designer. She is best known for her rock photography of notable musicians such as Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Madonna, Pearl Jam among many more, and her charity project[1]. She is also known for her work with the Japanese idol group Babymetal, being their official photographer from 2014 to 2016.

Yavin was born in Tel Aviv, Israel and moved to New York in 2000. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 2004.

Distortion began her career photographing for various media outlets and her work appeared in publications throughout the world, including Rolling Stone Magazine, Rolling Stone online, Spin Magazine, Billboard, NME, vice, CBS, and BrooklynVegan. Distortion has presented her work in numerous galleries and exhibitions around the world and has directed various films and music videos. She has taken photos for magazines, musical performers, album covers and books such as This Is the Noise That Keeps Me Awake[2] by Garbage (band) and Live at Wembley (Babymetal album) [3]

In 2017 Distortion founded her clothing brand Distortion Unplugged [4] with the credo "Rock And Roll You Can Wear" and "Made by music fans for music fans". The brand is dedicated to and inspired by music, photography, and what distortion describes as being a "professional music fan."

In 2019 Distortion started her podcast [5] interviewing notable musicians about their careers before they have gotten famous.

In 2021 Distortion started her radio show on MakerPark Radio. The show titled Living in Distortion [6]

While she was in film school Distortion has directed two feature films '"Flamtmates"' (2013) which she won 2003 first place Student Grant Award by The National Board of Review and'"Stolen"' (2014) She is currently in the process of making her third film and first Documentary.

Charity Projects[edit]


In 2018 Distortion curated a photography exhibition including seven female music photographers benefiting My Sister's Place domestic violence and human trafficking charity. The exhibit took place in a Brooklyn Gallery and featured photographs of the most famous women in music, taken by a group of acclaimed women photographers.

In 2020 Distortion has founded The Rock And Roll Project, a charity campaign supporting the music community and its worker affected by the pandemic and the aftermath of COVID-19 by purchasing a shirt from a collection of T-shirts she especially designed for the cause. She also created a blog sharing the stories of the people working in the music industry from musicians to stage workers. 100% of the proceeds from sales of The Rock And Roll Project is donated to Musicares.
