Daniel P. "Danny" Lutz, Jr. (born March 8, 1949) is an American farmer and writer, U.S. Air Force Major, and politician in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Since 2016, Lutz has served as Conservation District Supervisor for the Eastern Panhandle, representing Jefferson County. He ran unsuccessfully for West Virginia House of Delegates in 2014 and U.S. House of Representatives in 2018.

Early life and career[edit]

Daniel Lutz was born and raised in Charles Town, West Virginia, with family roots in the Eastern Panhandle region tracing back to 1761.[1] Lutz was brought up in the Presbyterian faith, and continues to teach Sunday School at his local church.[1]

Lutz received his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University and pursued his graduate studies at American University.[2]

Lutz served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and retired at the rank of Major.[1] As a writer, he has authored several stage plays, including one on the 1922 Treason Trial of Bill Blizzard, the Miners' General.[1] In addition to being an author, Lutz is also a farmer.

Activism[edit]

Mountain Party[edit]

Lutz currently serves on the West Virginia Mountain Party's State Executive Committee, representing its membership from the 16th Senate District.[3] As chair of the party's economic justice committee, Lutz has engaged in mutual aid projects on behalf of the party.[4]

Rockwool[edit]

In 2019 in his role as lieutenant governor of the Eastern Division of the West Virginia Kiwanis Club, Lutz invited the Deputy Ambassador of Denmark to the United States, Henrik Hahn, to meet with the local chapter, with the aim to open up communication between Jefferson County and Denmark regarding debate over pollution from a local Rockwool plant.[5] Hahn presented at the event and promised to deliver the messages from concerned Jefferson County residents to Danish Officials, however stated he stands by the corporation.[5]

Campaigns[edit]

House of Delegates[edit]

In 2014, Lutz ran for public office for the first time for House of Delegates on the Mountain Party ticket, challenging Republican incumbent Delegate Paul Espinosa of the 66th district. He received over 22% of the vote.[6]

Conservation District Supervisor[edit]

As a farmer, Lutz was uniquely qualified to run for Conservation District Supervisor and did so successfully in an uncontested election on May 10, 2016.[7] He was re-elected in another uncontested election on June 9, 2020.[8]

U.S. House of Representatives[edit]

In 2018, Lutz ran for Congress on the Mountain Party ticket, challenging Republican incumbent Rep. Alex Mooney. Lutz is the second Green affiliated candidate to run for West Virginia's 2nd congressional district, exceeding the previous record of 1.25% by receiving 3.07% of the vote.[9]

Governor[edit]

On June 20, 2020, Lutz was nominated by the Mountain Party at its virtual State Convention for the office of Governor for the 2020 election.[10][11]
