Daniela Soberman
Daniela Turudich Soberman (born August 13, 1976) is a first-generation Serbian American self-taught artist. She is primarily known for her immersive architectural-scale installations and sculptures. Much of her artwork focuses on the reconciliation of being the daughter to immigrants from former socialist Yugoslavia, who grew up making regular visits to Eastern Europe, with the experience of growing up in Los Angeles working-class, gang-war riddled immigrant neighborhoods.
Early life and education
Soberman was born in Downey, California. Her parents, both immigrants from former socialist Yugoslavia, immigrated to the United States in the late-1970s along with her older brother. Prior to immigrating to the United States, her father had been an engineer/inventor, helping invent the first fuel injection engine at Mercedes in the 1970s, and her mother was an artist. As American immigrants, both became blue collar laborers, with her father working as a car mechanic and her mother working in various Southern California factories including Mattel. Her parents divorced when Soberman was 12.
Soberman's youth was spent in immigrant enclaves in the Gateway Region of Los Angeles County, a region considered one of the most densely populated municipalities in the United States. She grew up most notably in Downey, Artesia and Long Beach during the gang wars of the late 1980s and early 1990s, with many of her friends involved in the gang wars during this time. Also in her youth, Soberman spent extended time in the former Yugoslavia visiting with her mother's family in Osijek, Croatia and her father's family in Belgrade, Serbia. Soberman is multi-lingual and speaks English and Serbo-Croatian.
During the Yugoslav civil wars of the 1990s, Soberman and her family helped and housed Yugoslav refugees while monitoring and helping hide family still in war-ravaged areas. During the wars, many members of Soberman's extended family were killed or displaced.
In 1994, Soberman graduated from Millikan Highschool in Long Beach, CA. As a fine artist, she is self-taught.
Career
Prior to 2021, Soberman had never shown her artwork publicly. This changed in 2021, when she was juried into an exhibition at the Long Beach Museum of Art. This was her first public exhibition. Also in 2021, Soberman created her first large, architectural scale piece for Nomad, an exhibition sponsored by the Torrance Art Museum. The creation of this piece led to her first museum commission. Her museum exhibitions include Willmore Resurrected[2], Memorial to the Future (the LA Art Show)[3], Deconstructed Labyrinth[4] and Stage 3 (the Torrance Art Museum), and Points of Intersection[5] (the Long Beach Museum of Art)[6]
Also in 2022, Soberman had her first gallery solo show at Gallery SADE[7].[better source needed]
She has several works in private collections and her works can be seen on artsty.
Personal life
Soberman lives and works in Northeast Los Angeles, California. She is married to an astrophysicist.
