Danilo Ljubotina (Serbian: Данило Љуботина; Srpsko Polje, around 1660 - 1739) was a Serbian Orthodox bishop of Gornja Karlovačka from 1713 to 1739, [1]with the archbishop's chair first in the monastery of Gomirje, and then in Plaški. [2]

Origin and early years[edit]

Danilo Ljubotina's family originally came from Herzegovina, from where his ancestors moved to the Habsburg areas in the Karlovac region. Danilo was born in the village of Brlog. [3] He received his tonsure in the then westernmost Serbian Orthodox monastery, Gomirje, and later became the abbot of this monastery. He was one of the main associates of Bishop Atanasije Ljubojević, with whom he participated in the work of the famous Krušedol Parliament (1708). At this assembly, the church and national unity of Orthodox Serbs in the Habsburg countries were defended. Since Emperor Joseph I recognized the diocesan jurisdiction of Bishop Atanasije (Ljubojević) only in the areas of Zrinopolje, Lika, and Krbava, after the bishop's death (1712) the survival of a single diocese for the entire area of Upper Krajina was called into question.[4] For some time, Ljubotina was the vicar of Metropolitan Sofronije.[5]

Episcopal service[edit]

At the Church-People's Assembly held in 1713 in Sremski Karlovci, a decision was made to divide the mentioned area into two special dioceses: Gornja Karlovačka for the pre-war area of the Karlovac Generalate around the monastery of Gomirje and Kostajnica, which included Zrinopolje, Lika, and Krbava. Danilo Ljubotina was elected Bishop of Gornji Karlovac, and Dionisija Ugarković was elected Bishop of Kostajnica. Both received an imperial certificate during the same year. [6]

As the bishop of Gornja Karlovačka, Danilo Ljubotina first sat in the monastery of Gomirje, and then he arranged a new center of the diocesan administration in Plaški (1721). He gained great merits for the organization of the diocese and the defense of Orthodoxy from the attacks of Roman Catholic bishops and their Greek Catholic protégés. Bishop Danilo was given the additional duty in 1737, after the death of Bishop Stefan Ljubibratić (fl. 1687-1718) of Zahumlje and Dalmatia, when he was entrusted with the temporary administration in the vacant Kostajnica diocese. [7]He performed the duties of the Bishop of Gornji Karlovac and the administrator of Kostajnica until his death, on 29 January 1739. This marked the beginning of a five-year period of great turmoil in the area of these dioceses, which was targeted by state authorities and various opponents of the Orthodox faith. With the persistent struggle of the Serbian people and hierarchy, the Diocese of Gornja Karlovac was defended, and the irregular situation ended with the arrival of Pavle Nenadović as the new bishop (1744).
