The Danish Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS) is an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense. It supports curiosity-driven research and brings together researchers from the university's five faculties and other academic institutions.[1][2]
The institute operates outside the University of Southern Denmark's conventional faculty structure. Its academic community includes chairs, fellows, visiting fellows and affiliated researchers working across the humanities, natural sciences, health sciences, engineering and social sciences.[1]
History
The origins of DIAS date to 2009, when physicist Francesco Sannino and organizational theorist Thorbjørn Knudsen began developing plans for an institute for advanced study at the University of Southern Denmark.[1] The institute officially opened in its present interdisciplinary form in 2016, with Sannino and Knudsen serving as co-directors and chairs appointed from all five faculties of the university.[1][2]
The first DIAS research fellowship began in 2016. A dedicated institute building on Fioniavej in Odense was completed and opened to affiliated researchers in 2020.[1]
Marianne Holmer, then dean of the university's Faculty of Science, became director in 2019. In August 2023, political scientist Sten Rynning succeeded her as director. The director reports directly to the rector of the University of Southern Denmark.[3]
In 2024, the institute introduced a Society of Fellows, a mentoring programme and a research initiative intended to support collaboration on complex societal issues.[1]
Organization
DIAS is part of the University of Southern Denmark but operates independently of its ordinary faculty structure. It is headed by a director and supported by a management committee, an advisory board and an administrative secretariat.[1]
Its researchers are divided principally between chairs and fellows. Chairs are established researchers representing different academic disciplines, while fellowship positions are generally intended for researchers at earlier stages of their careers. The institute also appoints affiliated and visiting researchers.[4]
Research programmes
The institute supports interdisciplinary research through fellowships, mentoring, collaborative projects and public academic events. Its main programmes include the Society of Fellows, the Visiting Fellow Programme, DIAS Explorations, Blue Sky Mentoring and research clusters.[5]
The Society of Fellows is a community for early-career researchers from different disciplines. The Visiting Fellow Programme allows researchers employed elsewhere within the University of Southern Denmark to join the institute for a fixed period. Participants receive access to interdisciplinary meetings, workshops, lectures and research-development activities.[6]
DIAS Explorations provides a framework and seed funding for collaborative research projects. Areas supported through the programme have included Danish capitalism, climate, health and nature in West Africa, and the social implications of robots in everyday life.[5]
The institute also organizes lectures and weekly academic events that are open to researchers and members of the public.[1]
Partnerships
DIAS is a founding member of NordIAS, a network of eight institutes for advanced study in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The network developed from a series of workshops held between 2021 and 2022 and was formally established in 2023.[7]
NordIAS coordinates exchanges, visiting fellowships, conferences and cooperation among its member institutes. Other members include the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, the Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies, the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study, the Tampere Institute for Advanced Study and the Turku Institute for Advanced Studies.[7]
