Daniel Joseph Sauter (born July 14, 1988) is a non-profit director and community organizer in San Francisco, California. He is running for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to represent Supervisorial District 3..[1]
District 3 includes the neighborhoods of North Beach, Chinatown, Telegraph Hill, North Waterfront, Financial District, Nob Hill, Union Square, Maiden Lane, and part of Russian Hill.
Biography[edit]
Sauter was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He studied Marketing and Chinese at Miami University. He is multilingual, speaking English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Spanish. Sauter has resided in San Francisco for nearly a decade and currently lives in North Beach with his wife.
Career[edit]
Community Organizing[edit]
Before entering politics, Sauter was involved in neighborhood issues. He first came to public notice as President of the North Beach Neighbors, where he co-led the effort to bring a weekly Farmer's Market to the neighborhood[2] and published a commercial vacancy study that raised alarm bells on the difficulties facing small businesses in San Francisco[3]. Most recently, Sauter started North Beach Delivers, a fee-free delivery program to provide relief and support to local restaurants during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Professional Life[edit]
Sauter is the Executive Director of Neighborhood Centers Together (NCT), an alliance of community centers across San Francisco including Cameron House in Chinatown and Richmond Neighborhood Center in the Richmond District. He helps the non-profit with grants, fundraising, program development, and empowerment to improve their communities.[4]
Politics[edit]
On January 28, 2020, Sauter announced that he would be a candidate for the District 3 Supervisor seat, challenging four-term incumbent Aaron Peskin. In June 2020, the San Francisco Ethics Commission certified Sauter's eligibility as the first publicly financed candidate in the November 2020 race [5]
In July 2020, Sauter vocally advocated for introducing a tax measure into the November 2020 ballot to finance Caltrain, which has seen a 95% reduction in ridership due to the COVID-19 pandemic in California.[6]
