Danny Yeung (born October 4, 1978) is an entrepreneur and investor. He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Prenetics Group[1][2]

Prior to "Prenetics"., Yeung was a Founding Partner at SXE Ventures. He also founded uBuyiBuy in 2010, a company that was acquired by Groupon six months later. [3]After which, Yeung was appointed CEO of Groupon East Asia before leaving the company in early 2014.[4]

Yeung's entrepreneurial journey started at the age of 25 when he ventured into franchising Hong Kong dessert chain, Hui Lau Shan by taking it to the USA. After exiting Hui Lau Shan, Yeung ventured into hospitality furniture, executing projects with MGM City Center, City of Dreams Macau and The Venetian. Yeung received his BS in MIS from the University of San Francisco in 2002.[5][6]

Early Life

Education & Early Career

When he was 12, Yeung started selling baseball cards after school. At the time, his nickname was “Boy Beckett” - named after the Beckett sports card price guide - because he could allegedly memorise all the prices.[5][7]

Yeung started working as a telemarketer when he was 15. During his time at school, he attended three high schools, including Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School, Mills High School and McAteer High School before obtaining his GED.

From the age of 18 to his mid-20s, while studying a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Management Information Systems (MIS) from the University of San Francisco, Yeung worked as an International Co-Location Deployment Manager at Keynote Systems and Director of Business Development, Asia at Barracuda Networks respectively. [8]

Career

Yeung began his entrepreneurial career at the age of 25 when he opened up the first Hui Lau Shan - a Hong Kong-style dessert chain - in San Francisco in 2003. At the time, he was travelling to Hong Kong once a year, where he was introduced to the chain. Three years later, when he was 28, Yeung sold the company to his cousin and ventured into the hospitality industry. He founded Gotop Global - a company that specialised in providing high-end hotels with furniture.[6] Some of the company's clients included MGM City Center, Las Vegas - the company secured a US$5 billion project to furnish 2,000 hotel rooms - City of Dreams, Macau, The Venetian Macau, and Wynn, Macau.[6][5]

In 2010, weeks after rejecting a $6 billion takeover offer from Google, Groupon raised $950 million worth of financing.[9] The news prompted Yeung to create a similar business model, which he took to Hong Kong.[7]

uBuyiBuy

Yeung's third project came in the form of group buying company, uBuyiBuy.com.[7] When Yeung was 31, he moved to Hong Kong and launched the site on June 28, 2010 in the midst of 57 competitors. Six months later, on December 1, 2010, the company was acquired by Groupon. [6]

Groupon

After selling his company, Yeung was appointed as CEO of Groupon East Asia. He oversaw a team of over 300+ people with annual revenues surpassing US$130 million.[6]He stepped down from the role in 2014. In the same year, Yeung became a Limited Partner and Mentor for 500 Startups - a Silicon Valley venture capital seed fund. He also became a Founding Partner for SXE Venture, and a Non-Executive Co-Founder of Fave.[6][10]

Prenetics

Yeung subsequently entered the healthcare industry in the form of Prenetics in 2014 - now, Southeast Asia's largest digital health and genetic testing company.[11][12] Since its inception, Prenetics has since received over US$40 million in strategic funding from Alibaba, Ping An, Venturra Capital and - as of November 2018 - has processed over 200,000 tests. The company has a team of 100+ people and is spread across eight offices in Asia, Europe and South Africa.[13]

Circle

On November 22, 2018, Yeung's company Prenetics launched https://circledna.com. Missing or empty |title= (help) - a consumer DNA platform. At the press launch held at Metta restaurant in Central, Hong Kong, Yeung said the company launched the platform to make cancer and disease prevention personalised to each individual.[14]

Personal Life

In November 2018, Yeung was invited by Tatler Hong Kong to attend the 2018 Breakthrough Prize in Silicon Valley - an awards ceremony that celebrates the leading scientific minds of our time. It's here that Yeung met Facebook Founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.[15] [15]
