Darawan Hamid Ghafar (Kurdish: دارەوان حاجی حامد), also known as Darawan Haji Hamid or Darawan Ghafar, is an Iraqi Kurdish diplomat and politician.[1] He has served as the representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to Spain since 15 August 2023.[2] According to the KRG Representation, he is also accredited to Portugal.[3]
Early life and education
Ghafar was born on 2 July 1990 in Sulaymaniyah. He later moved to France to pursue higher education, attending programs in political science and international relations at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels.[1]
Career
Before entering diplomatic service, Ghafar worked as a sports journalist with the Kurdish television network Kurdsat, serving as a correspondent based in France and covering Europe.[4]
He has been involved in Kurdish cultural and community activities in France, including serving as president of the French Kurdish Center and acting as an external representative to Kurdish journalist organizations.[1]
Ghafar has also been associated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in France and Belgium.[5]
Diplomatic activities
In 2024, Ghafar participated in establishing a municipal twinning agreement between Halabja and Guernica in the Basque Country of Spain.[6]
He has also promoted Spanish investment in the Kurdistan Region and cooperation in cultural, educational and economic sectors.[7]
