Darin Beckstead is an American film director and screenwriter best known for creating “Courage & Stupidity,” "Somebody’s Hero," and "Evil Nature.”[1][2]
Filmmaking[edit]
COURAGE & STUPIDITY[edit]
Beckstead's fantasy film, "Courage & Stupidity," was inspired by and reimagined the challenges Steven Spielberg faced when making “Jaws.” For the production, Beckstead layered in numerous easter-egg tributes to other Spielberg movies and pulled the title directly from a quote Spielberg gave regarding his memories of making the 70s blockbuster.[3][4] Kodak and Panavision sponsored the 25-minute production, enabling Beckstead to shoot on 35mm film.[5][6][7][8][9]
“Courage & Stupidity" screened at Fantasia and the Sitges Film Festival, and was spotlighted by Film Threat and Ain’t It Cool News.[5] [10] Ted Sarandos later made the film the first short to be offered as a stand-alone rental from Netflix[11] [7][12][13][14], and for the overall filmmaking endeavor, Marvin Levy, Mr. Spielberg’s publicist and Senior Advisor, penned a general letter of support, which can be found on Beckstead’s website.
SOMEBODY’S HERO[edit]
Beckstead wrote and directed the movie “Somebody’s Hero.” Production for the family-comedy took place in New York City and employed 16mm film to support Beckstead's retro vision for the story.[15] Beckstead said his hope was to also differentiate the picture from other movies in a similar genre.[16] The film screened at the Heartland Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival, and was awarded “Best Feature” at Coney Island’s Festival.[15][17][16][18]
EVIL NATURE[edit]
In 2018, Beckstead directed a live-action FX test in support of a proposed movie titled EVIL NATURE. The project employed practical and digital effects to demonstrate “monster movement,” and was detailed in a Q&A session with Daily Dead News.[19][20] The completed work won “Best Special FX” at 2018’s Indie Horror Film Festival.[21]
