Dark Beast, also known as the Black Beast, is a fictional character in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is an evil version of the X-Men's Beast from an alternate reality. His real name is Henry Philip McCoy, but he is commonly referred to as Dark Beast. While some may consider him a supervillain, his alignment and actions are subjective and open to interpretation.[1]
In the Age of Apocalypse reality, McCoy was a mad scientist who conducted cruel experiments under the tyrant Apocalypse. He escaped to the regular Marvel Universe, where he continued his unethical experiments.
Publication history[edit]
Dark Beast first appeared in X-Men: Alpha #1 (1995) and was created by Scott Lobdell and Roger Cruz.
Fictional character biography[edit]
Age of Apocalypse[edit]
In his alternate dimension, Hank McCoy was a mad scientist and geneticist working for Mister Sinister to breed powerful mutants. Without the ethical guidance of Charles Xavier, McCoy became ruthless and evil, earning the nickname "the Beast." He experimented on himself, gaining an ape-like appearance.
Into the Main Reality[edit]
Dark Beast escaped to Earth-616 through the M'Kraan Crystal and landed twenty years in the past with no memory. He met a young Emma Frost, who helped him regain his memories. He set up base in Manhattan's subway tunnels and created the Morlocks.
Infiltrating the X-Men[edit]
Dark Beast kidnapped the real Beast and infiltrated the X-Men by altering his appearance. He maintained the ruse until the Onslaught Saga, where he joined Onslaught.
Gene Nation[edit]
Dark Beast had run-ins with Generation X and Gene Nation. He led a revamped Gene Nation and the Brotherhood of Mutants.
Dark X-Men[edit]
During the Dark Reign storyline, Dark Beast joined the Dark X-Men as their scientist. He created the "Omega Machine" to experiment on mutants for H.A.M.M.E.R..
Back to origins[edit]
Dark Beast returned to the Morlock's Tunnels and captured the Lizard, experimenting on him to turn humans into humanoid lizards. The X-Men and Spider-Man intervened and took Dark Beast into custody.
Dark Angel Saga[edit]
Dark Beast helped the Uncanny X-Force team find a cure for Archangel in the Age of Apocalypse reality. He betrayed them and released the evil Dark Angel, aiding in his plan to destroy Earth.
X-Termination[edit]
Dark Beast assumed command over the Clan Akkaba and returned to the Age of Apocalypse, aiding Weapon Omega in resurrecting fallen mutants. He later returned to Earth-616 and was taken into custody.
Vindictive End[edit]
Dark Beast escaped and masterminded events leading the Uncanny X-Men and S.H.I.E.L.D. to war. He was eventually defeated and apparently killed.
Secret Empire[edit]
During the "Secret Empire" storyline, Dark Beast experimented on Inhumans in New Tian. He was taken into custody by mutants.
Technologic Body[edit]
Mister Sinister saved Dark Beast's head and attached it to a new cybernetic body. Dark Beast tricked the X-Men into dispersing a serum that was lethal to potential mutant children. He was executed by Magik.
Powers and abilities[edit]
Dark Beast has the same superhuman abilities and intelligence as the main Marvel Universe's Beast before his secondary mutation. After gaining a cybernetic body, he can counter-react to attacks, alter his body shape, and generate new limbs and energy-deflecting shields.
