Dark Souls: Nightfall is a upcoming fan-made modification intending to be a unofficial sequel to an alternate ending in the action role-playing video game Dark Souls.[1] made by a variety of Souls modders [2]. It's aim is to enrich the original's story by continuing the original Dark Souls storyline and lore, being set seconds after the game's "Dark Lord" ending in a Dark-shrouded Lordran, the setting of the first game[3]

The game's mechanics have been drastically overhauled, featuring an extensively expanded combat system[4], a heavily altered game world supported by a dynamic day-and-night cycle[5], fully voiced Non-player character's[6], and custom bosses made with professionally crafted models and movesets made exclusively for the mod[7].

Originally set to be released on December, 21, 2021, the mod was delayed to January, 21, 2022[8].

Development[edit]

Project-lead Grimrukh[9] began working on Nightfall in 2019, after releasing their first total conversion, Daughters of Ash[10], outling the first draft of the mod, and then building a team of experienced Soul's modders in 2020, all the while devoloping custom assets with the help of Dane Brennand[11], a modeller who worked on Demon's Souls (2020 video game). The team released a preview of the first twenty minutes of the mod in February 2021[12] , and then a teaser trailer during June 25.[13]. In the months following these previews, Grimrukh seldomly posted updates to avoid spoilers[14] until it was announced, to avoid creating a stressful holiday due to a final release crunch, the mod would be delayed by a single month [15], but was nearly complete. Grimrukh has cited The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask as a large influence on the mod[16].

Story[edit]

The game's opening takes place concurrently with the final boss fight of Dark Souls 1, Lord Gywn, in which the player, a nameless Undead imprisoned in the Undead Asylum, is jolted awake by a massive upheaval, which leads to the Undead discovering a massive quake has brought the Asylum just above the Kiln of the First Flame. The player ascends a forlorn peak, before plunging off the cliffside, witnessing from above the player character of Dark Souls 1, the Chosen Undead, slay Lord Gywn and abandon the first flame. After discovering a mysterious pendant once worn by the Lord of Cinder, the player stumbles upon what remains of the first flame, only to realize it remains alit, albeit as a dying ember. They purse the Chosen Undead till they reach the forgotten Chambers of Firelink Shrine, and watch the primeval Serpents crown the Chosen Undead, the Darklord of Humanity[17]

Reception[edit]

The mod garnered significant attention when it was announced, and even more when it's teaser and trailer released, the former garnering over 400,000 views[18] and the later almost a million in under a year[19]. Journalists were likewise drawn to the project for it's "impressive promise of being a direct sequel to the original game"[20], resulting in dozens of articles related to the project[21][22]. Website PC Gamer would state in an overwhelmingly positive preview, "There's always a chance that upcoming mod or fan projects will never quite come together. It's a scene that's full of good intentions and great concept art. But Dark Souls: Nightfall has some pedigree behind it, boasting a big team of well-known Souls modders and data-divers. You can tell that this project is coming from people who deeply love and understand the game they're working with.[23]"
