Flight Sim World (abbreviated to FSW) is a flight simulator that released into Early Access in 2017 developed by Dovetail Games. It is built on the same engine as Flight Simulator X, but numerous changes have been made to the underlying technology, with one of the most notable being the upgrade to 64-bit, which eliminates the OOM errors that had become synonymous with 32-bit flight simulators.

Flight Sim World came out of Steam Early Access[1] on the 18th of January[2], entering the second phase of development. The second phase of development will include bigger updates such as "a variety of aircraft including airliners," "IFR and ATC upgrades," "world improvements," and "dynamic and live weather." [3]. This started with the release of Dynamic Weather on February 1st [4] and will continue throughout 2018.

Overview[edit]

Flight Sim World is an evolving flight simulation platform, released into Early Access on May 18th, 2017. According to Executive Producer, Stephen Hood, Dovetail are trying to build a platform that will stand the test of time, over the next 5 or 10 years. [5] It includes seven GA aircraft, over 24,000 airports and a number of high detail airports. One of the more notable updates was the integration of trueSKY, [6] which overhauled the weather systems and saw the release of 'Advanced Weather' into FSW. On February 1st, Dynamic Weather was added as an Advanced Weather setting.

Flight Sim World is still in development, available for Windows systems via Steam. Dovetail released a free mission pack in November, which took players to Hawaii for a week in the life of a charter airline pilot, Kahului Air automatically downloaded to FSW. [7]

Features[edit]

Flight Sim World includes:

  • Seven single and twin propeller aircraft
  • 'Advanced weather' engine powered by trueSKY technology
  • Lessons and missions to test player skill
  • Pilot profile to track progress
  • Mission Editor for creating missions to share on Steam Workshop
  • Integration of Accu-Feel™ technology
  • Integration of Orbx FTX Global, which provides land scenery and seascapes to enjoy from above

Add-ons and SDK[edit]

A number of developers helped support the development of the Flight Sim World SDK, bringing new products into the sim whilst doing so. The SDK was released on December 7th [8], allowing users and experienced developers to create their own scenery objects, aircraft, and tools.

Six add-ons were released, with developer input helping to define the V1.0 SDK release:

  • Curtis P-40F Warhawk from BlueSky Flight Simulations[9]
  • Piper PA-28R Arrow III from Just Flight[10]
  • Big Bear Airport from Turbulent Designs
  • Epic Approaches from Dovetail Games
  • Moving Map from FS Flight Control
  • View and Slew from FS Flight Control

Reception[edit]

Reception to Flight Sim World thus far has been mixed, currently sitting at 65% all time positive rating on Steam[11]. Flight simulation website Mutley's Hangar praised the weather effects but noted that there are a lack of customization options in the setting menu. [12] Helisimmer praised the implementation of trueSKY, describing it as a breaking barriers in regards to immersion. [13] Saving Content said that "Dovetail Games has done right by Microsoft, and Flight Sim World has some rough edges, but nothing that can’t be smoothed out in the near future" praising the free flight and mission modes, but noting a lack of variety in the aircraft available. [14]

Flight Sim World has earned itself a gamerscore of 6.15 on game ranking aggregator website whatoplay based on 1.10K user reviews.[15]
