Darko US or Darko is an American deathcore supergroup formed in 2020. The band was formed by Tom Barber of Chelsea Grin (ex-Lorna Shore) and Josh "Baby J" Miller of Spite (ex-Emmure).
History
Formation and releases (2020-present)
Darko was announced in April 2020 as a new side project by vocalist Tom Barber and multi-instrumentalist Josh Miller.[1]
Darko premiered with their debut single, Devine Void, on April 18, 2020, which featured guest vocalist Darius Tehrani, frontman of Miller's other band, Spite.[2]
On June 6, 2020, Darko released their debut extended play, Pt. 1 Dethmask.[3]
On May 7, 2021, Darko released their first full-length self-titled album, Darko, and featured guest artists Ben Duerr (Shadow of Intent), Courtney LaPlante (Spiritbox), Johnny Reeves, and Nick Arthur (Molotov Solution).[4]
On September 26, 2022, Darko released their second full-length album, Oni, and featured guest artists Ryo Kinoshita (ex-Crystal Lake), Kyle Anderson (Brand of Sacrifice), Shaolin G (UnityTX), Taylor Barber (Left To Suffer), and Rory Rodriguez (Dayseeker).[5]
On April 19, 2022, Darko held an online contest asking for a sample-based song for their upcoming EP, Dethmask, Pt. 2. The winner would have their song featured on the EP, be credited for their work, and receive 1000 USD.[6] After reviewing more than 500 submissions, on April 28, 2022, Darko announced Ben Chalfant as the winner of the contest.[7] On December 30, 2022, Darko released Dethmask, Pt. 2 and featured guest artists Matt McDougal, Landon Tewers (The Plot in You), and Ben Chalfant.[8]
Musical style and lyrical themes
Musical style
Darko has been described primarily as deathcore[9], as well as metalcore, djent, and nu metal.[10] In an interview discussing the release of Dethmask, Pt. 2, Miller stated that he has metal influences, however, listens to the genre sparingly. One specific influence was his former Emmure bandmate, Joshua Travis, who Miller said was like a mentor.[11]
Despite deathcore being a genre associated with a heavier sound, growled vocals, and breakdowns, Miller noted taking inspiration from other genres that heavily feature synths and singing when writing Darko songs.[12]
Lyrical themes
Darko's lyrical subjects have touched on existentialism,[13] herd behavior,[14] dealing with loss,[15] and social reform.[16] Many of their songs contain themes and references drawn from various mediums of fantasy and science fiction. They have featured mentions to video games such as Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell,[17] Dark Souls,[18][19][20] and The Last of Us,[21] manga series such as Gantz,[22] as well as the media franchise Mars Attacks.[23] Darko have also written about subjects with personal significance, such as their single Donna, a song about Miller's late grandmother, Donna Miller.[24]
