Darryn August

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Darryn August is a South African[1] known as The Train hero for the incident that left him disabled.

August grew up in Athlone on the Cape Flats where he became involved in community work.[2]

On 25 April 2016[3] he reportedly attempted to intervene in a robbery taking place on a train and was flung from the train, however he might have just jumped and hurt himself.[4][5] He was found several hours later by maintenance workers.[3]

August initially could not remember the incident[4] and train operator Metrorail initially said it had no record of the incident.[6] It later emerged that one of the commuters in August's carriage, targeted by a large group of robbers, had been a heavily pregnant woman.[7][8] August was reported to have been defending the pregnant woman when he came under attack.[9] He was hit with a crowbar, stabbed with a knife, then thrown from the moving train, hitting a tree that snapped his spine.[10]

August was hailed as a hero[11][12] and a fund set up with the goal of raising R50,000 for his treatment.[13] The target was increased after it attracted five times that amount.[14][10]

In February 2018, investigative TV programme Carte Blanche raised questions about Darryn August's account of the event.[15][16][17]

None of those who had donated money towards his cause asked for refunds[18].
