Data Storytelling

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

A storytelling is one of the most effective approaches that has been known for a long time and used in many fields. If we come to the data industry, sometimes upper-level managers require a summary of data or the highlight of the important information in a report. But data have to be completely understood, so here comes the power of data storytelling that presents data in natural language to be used by business users effectively. Data storytelling uses narrative techniques instead of using presentation tools such as bar charts or scatter plots.[1]

With the propagation of big data, the need for Data Storytelling is increasing. Data Storytelling is a type of data visualization used to simplify complex information in order to communicate data insights with people, to uncover insights, and to support the business decision-making process. It’s a structured approach consisting of three key elements which are data, visuals, and narrative.[2] Combining the three elements correctly can drive to the desired goals for an organization that seeks to have better data analysis and accessibility.[3]

Data Storytelling will be one of the best-used tools to interpret analyzed data that leads to deeper analysis. Bernard Marr believes in the power of data storytelling and he considers it as the best form of visualization and Business Intelligence platforms.[4]

Characteristics of Data Storytelling

Beginning of data extraction moving through exploration, analysis, until interpretation. Data have to be presented in simple and natural language because interpreting data in narrative form will:

  • Break the limitation between machines and humans.
  • Catch the audience’s attention.
  • Deliver hard data to non-technical people easily.
  • Entrench the most important information to facilitate memorization.
  • Allow employees across business functions to access and explore data by themselves –self-service data analysis–.
  • Save time and effort.

Storytelling and Visualization

What makes storytelling different and unique from visualization is that storytelling presents the data with natural language so when it is presented to any person he can completely understand it and know what to do with this information, unlike visualization which only presents data on a graphical design thus making the viewer think to discover the meaning of the graph.[5]
