Early life and education[edit]

Early writing career[edit]

Soekanto began his writing career publishing short stories. At the age of 21, he published his first short story, 'Kenangan Hitam' in the magazine Mimbar Indonesia. Many of his subsequent works were published in the monthly magazine Kisah (founded by Sudjati SA) as well as Nasional in the 1950s.

In 1958, Balai Pustaka published Soekanto's first short story collection, 'Bulan Merah'. It received critical acclaim from cultural writer Trisno Sumardjo, who wrote about the collection in his magazine Budaya. Notably, one of Soekanto's short stories, 'Gali dan Kemudian Timbun', was subsequently included in an anthology of short stories, 'Satyagraha Hoerip', published by the Centre of Education and Development of Bahasa Indonesia (Pusat Pembinaan dan Pengembangan Bahasa Indonesia) under the aegis of the Indonesian Department for Education and Culture (Depdikbud).

Editor and contributor at Si Kuncung[edit]

In 1956, Sudjati SA published Si Kuncung, a children's magazine that was the first of its kind to reach a wide audience. The impetus for its publication was what he perceived as a lack of quality children's literature in a market that was filled with imported comic books. Soekanto became one of the magazine's editors and regular contributors through to the end of the magazine's publication in the late 1970s.

Storytelling career[edit]

In 1979, Soekanto started giving storytelling sessions at Taman Ismail Marzuki. Later, he was asked to give these storytelling sessions as part of TV appearances with Kak Seto.
