Databento is an American financial technology company that provides market data APIs and financial data services. Databento operates as a licensed distributor for major trading venues and exchanges, like NASDAQ, NYSE, and CME, among others.[1][2][3] Founded in 2019, the company was recognized as a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer in 2022.[4]
History
Databento was founded in February 2019 by Christina Qi.[5] Qi previously was a cofounder of Domeyard LP, a quantitative hedge fund that traded up to $7.1 billion in daily volume.[6][7] Prior to founding Domeyard, Qi worked at UBS and Goldman Sachs.[8]
The company's team includes employees with previous experience at trading firms such as Two Sigma, Flow Traders, Virtu Financial, and Tower Research Capital.[9]
Databento launched its historical data service in April 2023 and its live data services in August 2023.[10]
In October 2024, the company raised an additional $10 million in Series A funding, bringing its total Series A round to $30 million.[11] The funding round included participation from Belvedere Trading, Clear Street, and Lightscape Partners.[12]
Products and services
Databento provides historical and real-time market data through cloud-based APIs, covering equities, futures, options, and options on futures.[13] The company operates as a licensed distributor for several major trading venues and exchanges.[1][2]
As of September 2025, the company sells data from over 60 venues and exchanges, an increase from the 40 sources they offered in 2023.[14][15]
Databento's API client libraries are usable in Python, Rust, and C++.[16][17][18]
The company hosts servers in colocation facilities with exchange servers and offers both subscription-based licensing and usage-based pricing models.[19] Databento's data is often used by customers to create trading strategies or analyze market behavior.[20]
Customers
Databento serves trading firms, hedge funds, energy trading companies, large tech companies, and academic institutions.[21][22] As of 2025, the company reported serving over 16,000 customers.[23]
Leadership
Christina Qi serves as Chief Executive Officer.[24] She graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Management Science and serves on the MIT Corporation Development Committee.[6][25] Qi was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in finance in 2018.[26]
Recognition
In 2022, Databento was named a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum.[27] The Technology Pioneers program recognizes companies using new technologies to address global challenges.[28]
