    Datafari is an Open source enterprise search software using Apache Solr (a project of the Apache Software Foundation). It is a packaged search engine, offering connection to data sources, indexing, searching, and graphical system administration. The software is distributed using a distributed computing architecture, using SolrCloud.[1] Datafari uses Apache Solr for indexing and searching. It combines Apache ManifoldCF, Apache Solr, and Apache Cassandra.[2] Its graphical interface is based on HTML5, CSS3, and jQuery.

    Background

    Datafari was created by France Labs. France Labs sought an open-source search software to improve its R&D with a new intranet relevance algorithm. The team found no well-maintained, available software under an Apache License and created Datafari. It became an independent product, valuable in itself, beyond its initial role in developing the algorithm. The first open-source version, 1.0, was released on March 4, 2015.[3] In May 2015, France Labs won the Big Data trophy at the IT Innovation Forum thanks to Datafari.[4] Version 2.0 (a major update due to the technical migration from Solr 4 to Solr 5) was released on September 7, 2015.[5]

    France Labs, founded in late 2011 by Cédric Ulmer, Olivier Tavard, and Aurélien Mazoyer, is headquartered in Nice, France.[6]

    Functionalities

    The main functionalities of Datafari 2.1 are:

    For users of the search engine

    • Textual search, including boolean operators;
    • A crawler based on Apache ManifoldCF that indexes CMS (Alfresco, SharePoint, ...), websites, fileshares (NetApp, Samba, Windows), emails, databases, and HDFS; Check the ManifoldCF website for a more complete list.
    • "Full text" analysis and a plugin system for adding transformation filters during indexing and searching;
    • Multilingual management and automatic recognition of over 20 languages;
    • REST API for configuration and searching using Apache Solr and Apache ManifoldCF;
    • Fully configurable search relevance algorithm;
    • Graphical interface in HTML5 and JavaScript, using HTML widgets, and responsive design;
    • Use of Apache Tika to analyze and extract content and metadata from various document types (MS Office, OpenOffice, HTML, XML, PDF, RTF, TXT, ZIP, EXIF, MP3...);
    • Likes and favorites (v2.1) to save results;
    • Email alert system for push notifications of new results (rather than pull).

    For administrators of the search engine

    • Graphical analytics tool for user search queries;
    • Administration tool for the Solr used in Datafari;
    • Tool to analyze query performance and relevance;
    • Security administration tool with AD or LDAP connection;
    • Tool to manage synonyms;
    • Tool to manage promo links, enabling display of non-indexed data for identified keywords;
    • Tool to manage crawling connectors, with pre-built connectors for data sources (SharePoint, fileshares, emails, websites, CMIS) and the ability to create new ones;

    Development

    • The Datafari source code is available on GitHub;[7]
    • The Datafari technical documentation is available on Confluence;

    Partners

    • Datafari is part of the Charm Partner Program of Ubuntu.[8]
