Early life[edit]

Dave was born and grew up in the upper peninsula of Michigan. He was born in Escannaba, and was raised in Ishpeming. His mother was a school teacher at the local high school, Westwood High School. When Dave was a senior in high school, his mother was his teacher for a creative writing class. He was fortunate enough to earn an A in the class his mother taught. Dave describes his mother as being particularly hard on him as a student. Dave's father was a grocer at an independent grocery store named Joseph's which later became Joseph's Super Value. Joseph's Super Value was one of two grocery stores in Ishpeming, and his father was well known throughout the local area.

From 1987 to 1993 Dave played in a local band known as Kranial Explosion. Dave played drums, and sang backup vocals. Kranial Explosion was popular at local bar Hickey's in downtown Ishpeming. The band would perform regularly on Thursday nights despite many of the band members being under age.
