Dave Wright (born May 16, 1985) is an American poet, writer, and publisher. He has been associated with the American Alt Lit Movement (2010 - 2018).[1][2]

Life[edit]

David Lee Wright was born on May 16, 1985, in Nashville, TN, to Lance Corporal LD Wright of the United States Marine Corps and Leilani S. McCaleb. Raised on a multi-family farm 40 miles west of Nashville, he lived there with his brother Caleb and other family members.

He attended Dickson Elementary School, Dickson County Junior High School, and Dickson County High School, where he played football and soccer. He was also an active member of the Drama Club, Forensics Club, BETA Club, and Woods & Waters.

For his undergraduate studies, he went to Tennessee Technological University. There, he served as Editor of the campus newspaper, The Oracle, hosted a weekly variety radio show on WTTU called "The Chronicles of the Mule," and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Society for Collegiate Journalists, and English Honors Society. He was awarded the 2006 William Jenkins Scholarship for Creative Writing and received the Best Film award at the 2006 Varsity Film Festival. His mentors included Poet Tom Saya, Journalist and author Earl Hutchison, and Author Russ Witcher.

He continued at Tennessee Technological University for his graduate studies from 2008 to 2010 and worked as Consumer Credit Manager for DT McCall & Sons Home Furnishings retailer from 2007 to 2010.

From 2015 to 2017, he attended the Sewanee School of Letters Graduate Program, where his thesis advisor was National Book Award Short-lister Chris Bacheleder. He also worked as a summer copyeditor at The Sewanee Review.

David's 4th great-grandfather is Christian Author and Founder of the Zoshigaya Missionary Museum (School) in Tokyo, Japan, J.M. McCaleb.[3] The J.M. McCaleb[4] Missionary Center at Lipscomb University in Nashville is named after the family.

In January 2010, while on a mission trip to Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, he witnessed the catastrophic earthquake that claimed the lives of over 125,000 people.

Wright's work has been showcased in The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature,[5][6] Black Heart Magazine, Best of Black Heart 2014, The Newer York, HUSMW, Cutty Spot Interviews, Calliope Magazine, The Caper Literary Journal's Anthology VWA: Poems for Haiti, Alt-Lit Gossip, and The Wright Archives.

Wright received an Emmy nomination in 2016. The book trailer short film for The Orphan Mother by Robert Hicks, featuring Wright, was released in Fall 2016 and earned an Emmy nomination soon after.[7]

He was the featured poet at East Side Storytellin' #42: Where The River Life Ran Through Us All, a well-known reading and music series in East Nashville.[8]
