Davi Pretto

Davi Pretto (Porto Alegre, June 16 1988) is a Brazilian film director, best known for the filmsCastanha (2014), Rifle (2016) and Continente (2024).

Career

He graduated in cinema at PUCRS em 2008. At the age of 25, he premiered his feature debut Castanha[1] at the Forum section of the 64th Berlin Film Festival in 2014. The film won Best Film at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival in the New Trends section and also competed in festivals such as Edinburgh, Hong Kong, Bafici and Havana.

In 2017, his second feature, the neo-western Rifle[2], was presented at the Forum section of the 67th Berlin Film Festival and later at the FID Marseille. The film won the Grand Prize at the Jeonju Film Festival and the Critics Prize and Best Screenplay Award at the 49th Brasília Film Festival.

He was a DAAD Berlin Artists-in-Residence fellow in 2018.

His third feature, the horror drama "Continent", was made in co-production between Brazil, France and Argentina, with the support of the Berlinale World Cinema Fund and San Sebastián Film Festival - WIP Latam section. In 2024, "Continent" was screened in the main competition of the 57th Sitges Film Festival and won Best Director at the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival in the New Trends section.

His fourth feature, the lo-fi sci-fi "Future Future"[3], was selected for the 59th Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Proxima competition.

He has also written and directed ten short films, including Quarto de Espera (2009), co-directed with Bruno Carboni, Como se Vive, Como se Torce (2014), Metade Homem, Metade Fantasma (2015) and Deserto Estrangeiro Archived 2020-12-01 at the Wayback Machine (2020). A retrospective of his work was presented at the Arsenal Film Institut in Berlin.
