David Braid (Welsh composer)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

David Braid, Welsh composer, born 13 June 1970, Wrexham, Wales - currently (2021) residing/active in London, England since 1990.

David grew up in Colwyn Bay on the North Wales coast. His introduction to music was through piano lessons with his mother at around eight years old, later taking violin and guitar lessons.

He was involved in various musical activities during his early teens ranging from playing in rock bands to fiddle playing in the school folk group, then focusing primarily on classical guitar and composition in his later teens.

David studied at The Royal College of Music from 1990 to 1994, taking joint-first study in Guitar with Charles Ramirez and Composition with Edwin Roxburgh; also attending the composition classes of George Benjamin. David later undertook further composition study, with Robert Saxton at The University of Oxford.

He later took up the mandolin, now his primary instrument.

David’s work has been performed internationally in Europe and the Americas and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Major UK performances include Wigmore Hall, The Purcell Room and Wilton’s Music Hall.

He is highly prolific, having completed well over 150 works, including three symphonies, a viola concerto, and some 60+ works for the mandolin. [1] He also plays the Renaissance lute.

His music is published by Productions d’Oz (Quebec) and Le Luth Doré (Paris) [2]and [3]

Steve Reich said of David’s work: “Morning – Integration of voice with string quartet beautifully done – particularly first entrance. Writing for instruments is solid and sounds very good to me. Very honest stuff”. [4]

Two single-composer albums (CD/download) of his work are available on the Toccata Classics and Divine Art labels: David Braid, Chamber & Instrumental Music and David Braid: Songs, solos and duos.

There are some further 35 download-only releases; some of which are part of his Auto-work series, where he plays all the instruments himself. [5]

As well as concert music, David has written film scores, e.g. for the Polish animation: Blask (Shine) and the live action film: Compartment. He also wrote the tutorial book/CD, Play Classical Guitar that was later published in Spanish translation.

David plays a Collings MT mandolin.
