David John Finlay III (born 15 May 1993) is a German-born Northern Irish professional wrestler known simply as David Finlay. He is currently signed to New Japan Pro Wrestling, where he is currently in his first reign as one third of the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champions with Ricochet and Satoshi Kojima.
Professional wrestling career
Early career (2012–2015)
On December 22, 2012, Finlay made his professional wrestling debut at European Wrestling Promotion, wrestling against Big Van Walter. [1] On the same day, he and his father defeated Danny Collins and Robbie Brookside in an Irish Street Fight.[1] He later competed in various independent promotions such as Universal Independent Wrestling,[2] All Star Wrestling[3] and World of Unpredictable Wrestling. On October 10, 2014, Finlay won his first professional wrestling title, the POW Junior Championship, in a three-way match.[4]
New Japan Pro Wrestling (2015–present)
On May 7, 2015, it was announced that Finlay was signed by the Japanese promotion New Japan Pro Wrestling and that he would participate in the Best of the Super Jr. XXII, entering the B block. In his NJPW debut and Best of the Super Juniors match, he lost to Alex Shelley. He also had a unique personal attire. At the end of the tournament, Finlay did not qualify. Later, he competed as one of NJPW's "Young Lions", a class of rookie wrestlers who primarily wrestled each other early on, wearing all black gear and with no distinct ring character, all part of the structured learning process in NJPW. He later competed with and won some matches against fellow Young Lion Jay White. On May 19, Finlay was called in to replace Matt Jackson at the 2016 Best of the Super Juniors.[5] From May 21 to June 7, Finlay competed in the tournament, scoring 2 points by defeating the veteran Gedo. On September 1, Finlay participated in Lions Gate Project 3, debuted a new attire and a new finisher called Prima Nocta, and defeated GO Asakawa. He subsequently received a push and began winning more matches.
On September 25, 2016, Finlay won his first championship in NJPW. Finlay, Ricochet and Satoshi Kojima defeated Bullet Club (Adam Cole and Matt and Nick Jackson) to win the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship, marking his graduation from Young Lion status. This led to a match at King of Pro-Wrestling on October 10, where Finlay and Ricochet unsuccessfully challenged The Young Bucks for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship.[6] Finlay and Ricochet entered the 2016 Super Jr. Tag Tournament, defeating Gedo and Will Ospreay. Finlay and Ricochet lost in the semifinals to ACH and Taiji Ishimori.
