David Lazenby CBE.[1] [2] FIStructE, FICE is a British structural engineer born in 1937 in Frimley, Surrey.[3] [4]
Early life and education
After 5 years at boarding school, Lazenby joined Balfour Beatty as an indentured pupil and studied on a day-release course at Battersea College of Advanced Technology (now the University of Surrey). He passed the examinations of the Institution of Civil Engineers to become a graduate Civil Engineer. He then studied concrete structures at Imperial College and was awarded a DIC in 1960.[3]
Career
At Balfour Beatty, Lazenby worked on heavy engineering projects, including an immersed-tube crossing of the English Channel. He joined Andrews, Kent and Stone (AKS, now AKSWard)[5] working on building projects. Lazenby was made an Associate of the practice in 1968 and a Partner in 1972. His projects included the Merchant Navy College at Greenhithe[6], buildings at the National Library of Wales, County Hall of East Sussex, many commercial buildings in the City of London, and hospitals in Nigeria. Lazenby undertook some mid-career development at City University in engineering administration. In 1982, he was appointed Chairman of AKS.[5] Lazenby was chairman of the technical committee for BS 5950 and became active in the European Committee for Standardization. In 1985, he was appointed Chairman of all BSI Technical Committees overseeing UK codes for structural engineering. In 1997, he became Director of British Standards and led the European development of the new generation of Eurocodes until 2003.[7] [8] [9] Lazenby was chair of CEN Technical Committee 250[10] and chairman of the Structural Steel Design Awards (SSDA) judges.[11]
Lazenby was President of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 1990–91 and President of the International Building Study Group (IBSG) in 2015.[12]
