David Loomis Cargill (1959 – June 9, 1998) was the last person to be executed by electric chair in the state of Georgia. He was a criminal convicted of robbing and shooting a couple, Danny and Cheryl Williams (aged 29 and 41), to death on January 22, 1985, at a service station. Along with his brother, Tommy Cargill, who was later sentenced to life imprisonment, he shot the couple. Afterward, they went to a fast-food restaurant, then placed the murder weapon in a plastic bag and hid it under a doghouse. The gun had no fingerprints, but it was purchased by David Cargill. On February 13, 1985, David and Tommy Cargill were arrested. David Cargill's former wife, Brenda Mathis Cargill, had overheard his plan to rob people with his brother. The next day, Brenda saw a possible link between the murders and the Williams' deaths. She then went to Tommy Cargill's house and threatened to call the police unless he revealed David Cargill's location. Tommy refused, claiming Brenda was worsening the situation. Brenda then went to the police about David and Tommy Cargill. The police arrested both brothers and interrogated David Cargill about the murders; he confessed. At a trial on July 15–20, 1985, a Muscogee County jury found David Cargill guilty of armed robbery and two counts of murder, sentencing him to death by electrocution. On June 9, 1998, David Cargill was executed by electric chair at 7:00 P.M. EDT at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison.
