David S. Liem

David S. Liem (born Sioe Sing Liem on 17 September 1937 in Java; died 11 June 2017 in Potomac, Maryland) was an American herpetologist of Indonesian descent.

Life and work

Liem, born on 17 September 1937 in Java, emigrated to the United States in 1964. In 1969, he received his doctorate from the University of Illinois.[1]

In 1972 he discovered the southern gastric brooding frog (Rheobatrachus silus) in Queensland, Australia, which he described for the first time the following year and for which he established the subfamily Rheobatrachinae together with William Ronald Heyer in 1976. From August 1973 to July 1974 he was employed by the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on a project in the Garu Wildlife Management Area to determine the proportion and value of wildlife as a food source in relation to other utilisable resources.[1]

In Australia, he worked as an environmental scientist at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. From 1990 to 2017, he worked as a communications specialist, information resources specialist, toxicologist and pesticide risk assessor at the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C..[1]

Dedicatory names

In 1980, the Australian herpetologist Glen Joseph Ingram [de] named the frog species Taudactylus liemi after David S. Liem.[2][3]
