The Last House is a custom and contemporary designed house that gives the clients the experience of a heavily wooded property from each corner of the living space.[9] Influenced by mid-century modern designs, the house design is respectful to the landscape and also acts as barrier-free.[7][9]
The house is divided into two buildings, connected by a skeletal steel structure called a bridge.[7] The house consists of two buildings connected by a steel and glass bridge, with an open-concept space.[9][7] On one side is a coffee bar.[7] On the other side lies a black brick Guillotine fireplace with a custom concrete mantel that mirrors the roofline of the home.[7]
The glass walls are designed to capture uninterrupted views of the property, such as the paved stone walkway and landscaped front yard to the infinity pool and forested backyard.[7]
The design of the master suite was influenced by a bird's nest and designed to act as a nest floating in the backyard.[7]
The main concept and theme of the house design is "nostalgia". The orange-red front door adds contrast, character and is a bold front door choice of the mid-century modern homes the clients grew up admiring.[7]

The design of David's House echoes the design philosophy of Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Style architecture.[10] This is a design style known for its respectful merging with its surrounding environment.[10] Angled walls and overhangs are some of the defining characteristics of Prairie style architecture.[11] They reinforce the extreme horizontality of the home, which helps ground it to the property.[11]
David's House consists of a combination of low sloping and flat roofs. The main materials used were stone, wood and glass – natural materials that further connect the home to the site and environment.[11]
David and his wife, Jackie, live with their children in this house.[12] The house has an open concept plan designed for family living.[12] An open concept plan is another feature of Prairie Style architecture.[10] David's House open concept plan allows for design changes throughout the years.[11]
An open concept plan also makes it possible to redirect an individual's view to a target area with ease.[12] In David's house, the view of individuals is quickly shifted to a 21 foot ceiling as they enter the house.[12] Below lies a custom built 93- inch dining table, designed to be the microcosm of the entire house, under a 21 foot ceiling.[12]
