David Tarleton is an American film and television producer, director, editor and educator. He has worked on numerous Hollywood and Independent feature films, television and web series, documentaries, shorts and music videos. He is best known as the director of the feature film Hunter (2019), as producer and director of the television series Dark Secrets (2013-2014), and editor of The Muppets’ series Statler and Waldorf: From the Balcony (2005-2006). He is currently the Director of the MFA programs in Cinema and Television Arts at Columbia College Chicago.

Career[edit]

After receiving his B.A. from the University of Virginia, Tarleton graduated with an M.F.A. from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 2000. His breakthrough film as producer, director and editor was his student film from USC, the gothic fairy-tale Dinner, (2000) which premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival, played on the SyFy Channel, and was released on DVD.[1][2]

He is producer and director of the award-winning feature film, the supernatural thriller Hunter (2019), which premiered at the Manhattan Film Festival, and was released by Random Media.[3] Shot during the polar vortex in Chicago, it won the Best Horror Feature Film at the Manhattan Film Festival (2018) and Best Feature at the Freak Show Horror Film Festival (2018).[4]

He produced and directed the stereoscopic 3D television series Dark Secrets (2013-2014), for cable channel 3Net.[5]

Tarleton is executive producer and director for Dorkumentary, the award-winning, improv-based comedy series he created with his wife, Adria Dawn. A total of 7 episodes have been released from 2008–2018. In November 2017, Adria Dawn and David Tarleton presented DorkumentaryLIVE! at Stage 773 in Chicago, IL, turning this series into a live variety format.[6]

As producer, director and editor, Tarleton makes a series of short films called Kids Matter.[7] These films for social change are produced with Revealing Media Group and include Bystander (2014), Excluded (2015), Viral (2016), Pressure (2016), Help (2017), Blackout (2018), and Unsafe (2019).

He produced, directed and edited the music video for Starfield Tectonics (2019), by Andrew Edwards.[8] Tarleton was producer and editor on the pilot for “Dark Secrets,” (2004),[5] and was senior editor for “The Pat Kilbane Show” (2003) for Comedy Central.[1] David was the senior editor at Wirebreak Entertainment, a pioneering Internet video content production and distribution company.[9]

He produced and edited the award-winning feature documentary What Babies Want (2004), narrated by Noah Wyle.[10] For Sony Pictures, he produced and edited the documentaries The Making of Warriors of Heaven and Earth (2003) and The Making of Double Vision (2002).[9][1] He is a producer on the award-winning documentaries about Syrian refugee children, SafeZone: Fatima's Journey (2017), SafeZone:Potato Girls (2018), and SafeZone: Four Years Later (2019).[11]

Tarleton is an Associate Professor in Cinema and Television Arts at Columbia College Chicago, where he teaches film directing and editing. He also speaks and gives workshops on filmmaking and on-camera acting.[12][13]
