Davide Giri (died 3 December 2021) was an Italian computer scientist.[2][3]

In 2021, Giri was a PhD student in computer science at Columbia University.[4][5]

Early life and education

Giri was originally from Alba, Piedmont in Italy.[6] He had obtained his diploma in the Liceo Scientifico Cocito in Alba in 2009. In 2012, he graduated from the Polytechnic University of Turin with 110/110 cum laude. He played the piano and was a football enthusiast and player. He was on the team at the New York International Football Club.

Academic career

Death

On December 3, Giri was attacked and stabbed to death in New York, at 123rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue, near Morningside Park, not far from the Columbia University campus.[7] On the night of his murder, another Italian, Roberto Malaspina, was also stabbed in the back and seriously wounded in the abdomen.[8] Malaspina had arrived in the United States just the day before, December 1, 2021, and that night at about 11 pm he was walking up 110th Street, south of Harlem, five blocks away from where Giri was. The aggressor was later identified as Vincent Pinkney, 25, a member of the criminal gang EveryBody Killer; he first killed Giri and then, with his knife still bloodied, seriously injured Roberto Malaspina.[9] The first murderous attack occurred at 10:56 pm between 123rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Morningside; the second attack occurred at 11:10 pm between 110th Street and Cathedral Parkway at the beginning of Central Park West. The attacker intended to strike again. The police managed to find and arrest him through the testimony of a third man, who reported being threatened with a knife in nearby Central Park.[10][11] Giri was returning from training with his soccer team, the New York International Football Club. On December 4, 2021, a memorial ceremony was held on the campus of Columbia University. His soccer teammates also wrote a memorial statement offering condolences to his family.[12] Many shocked students attended the commemoration; some carried lighted candles, others left flowers. Columbia University’s president, Lee Bollinger, wrote, "On behalf of the entire Columbia community, I send my deepest condolences to Davide's family."

Reaction

The Italian-American community in New York was deeply shocked by Giri's murder and the attempted murder of Malaspina. In Italy, Giri's murder caused widespread pain and dismay.[13][14]
