Dawkinsia uttara, or Northern Filament Barb, is a species of freshwater fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae. It is endemic to the Uttara Kannada district in the state of Karnataka, India.[2]

Description

Dawkinsia uttara is a small-sized fish, reaching up to 6 cm (2.4 in) in length. The body is slender and elongated with a pointed snout. The dorsal fin has 3-4 spines and 7-8 soft rays, while the anal fin has three spines and 5-6 soft rays. The body colouration is brownish-yellow, and the scales have a metallic luster.[3]

Distribution and habitat

This species is found only in the Shiravati River basin, which is a part of the Western Ghats in the Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, India. It inhabits the shallow and slow-moving streams, where it feeds on small invertebrates.[4]

Conservation status

Dawkinsia uttara is currently classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List due to its limited distribution and declining population. The species is threatened by habitat loss, water pollution, and overfishing.[5]

Etymology

The genus name Dawkinsia was given in honour of the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, while the species name uttara refers to its distribution in the Uttara Kannada district.[6]
