Day of Eight Billion

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Day of Eight Billion, on 15 November 2022, has been designated by the United Nations[1] as the approximate day when the world's population will reach eight billion. It follows the Day of Seven Billion, which was marked on October 31 2011 and the Day of Six Billion, which was marked on October 12 1999.

Perspectives on the Day of Eight Billion

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said “This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity, and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates. At the same time, it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitments to one another."[2]

According to a press release from UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, "Reaching this milestone is both a cause for celebration and a clarion call for humanity to find solutions to the challenges we face.[3]." Its Executive Director, Dr. Natalia Kanem says, "This is a success story, not a doomsday scenario. Our world, despite its challenges, is one where higher shares of people are educated and live healthier lives than at any previous point in history. Focusing exclusively on population totals and growth rates misses the point – and often leads to coercive and counter-productive measures and the erosion of human rights. In fact, people are the solution, not the problem. Experience shows that investing in people, in their rights and choices, is the path to peaceful, prosperous and sustainable societies."[3]
