Days of the New Presents Tree Colors (also known as the Rainbow album) is the fifth album by Days of the New, an Alternative rock band. Scheduled for release in late 2008, it marks the first album following Travis Meeks' recovery from addiction. A concept album based upon Travis' personal metaphor for what he perceives as the internal battles of World War III, the enigmatic nature of the album's existence is solely centered around a lack of distribution and perfectionism.

Overview

Shortly after finalizing his rehabilitation, Travis' royalties were seized by the Internal Revenue Service, prompting him to tour. He started touring solo, but later hired his friend Ray Rizzo as the project's drummer, and Malcolm Gold as bassist. During his sobriety, he released a biography and promoted Days of the New Presents Tree Colors as his official fourth release, a conceptual piece on the controversial nature of spiritually driven internal struggles. Throughout the 2000s, Meeks also implemented live performances using instruments such as the upright bass, koto, and hammered dulcimer, which he planned to use on the album.

Days of the New Presents Tree Colors was planned to contain the acoustic spirit of their debut, as well as the orchestral implementations on Red and the musical refinement of Green, with a far more original focus. The album carries the darkest songwriting in Travis' discography, with songs such as "Pulling Your Chains" and "The Witness / Inadequate" blatantly referencing dark subject matter such as shame, inadequacy, suicide, and possession, while also approaching these themes in a mature light. Much like Green, many of the album's songs contain intros and codas to seamlessly transition into the next song. Travis himself largely recommends that listeners first listen to their 2014 successor EP, Aqua Marine Shuttle, considering the album's subject matter to be not for the faint of heart for the average Alternative rock listener. Meeks and the fanbase consider the unreleased piece to be taken seriously and immaculately – often described as intense, real, controversial, and spiritual.

Prior to his death, the late Alice In Chains bassist Mike Starr was meant to play on the album. Meeks and his wife discovered Starr deceased in his residence, later prompting a divorce. Meeks also lost his father the following year, and after the breakup of the original lineup during the 2014 Full Circle tour, Meeks spiraled back into addiction, with relapses eventually leading to multiple arrests and stints at the Indiana Correctional Facility.
