On March 12, 2025, Chantel Crump, a 9-year-old girl from Grays Farm, Antigua and Barbuda, was reported missing. A 20-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the case, and after police questioning, Crump's remains were recovered in Weatherhills on March 15. The suspect has been charged with murder.

Background

Crump was the youngest of four children and attended Five Islands Primary School.[1]

Abduction and investigations

Witnesses reported that she was picked up by a woman driving a car, less than one minute from her home. She was walking home from school with classmates when she was abducted.[2]

After a search by residents and law enforcement, police arrested a 20-year-old woman, who was held for questioning.[3] Following three days of police questioning, the suspect's report led police to Crump's remains in a secluded area at Weatherhills, miles from where she was abducted.[4]

The circumstances surrounding Crump's abduction and death raised numerous questions and concerns among the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda, and especially her parents.[5] Although a second person was held in connection with the crime, no additional suspects were identified in connection with the case.[6]

Crump's parents did not receive an official copy of the autopsy results. The police told them via a telephone call that the report is inconclusive, and Crump’s cause of death could not be determined.[7] Law enforcement indicated that forensic samples were sent overseas for advanced testing.[8]

Legal proceedings

The suspect was charged with murder less than 24 hours later and taken before the court under heavy security. The hearing was held at 7 am at the St John’s Magistrate’s court on March 17. She was remanded to His Majesty’s Prison.[9]

The suspect made a second appearance in the Magistrate’s Court on June 4, where she tried to secure a private legal representation but failed.[10]

Public reaction

With other unresolved murder and disappearance cases in Antigua and Barbuda and the surrounding area,[11] the murder caused widespread public outrage.[12] Many Antiguan and Barbudan citizens expressed their anger at the country's rising violent crime rate and urged the government to take more effective measures to combat crime and ensure justice for victims and their families.[13]

Residents also called for the death penalty for the suspect. They marched the streets with placards.[14] The Hispanic community of Antigua and Barbuda also joined the call with residents.[15]

Social media were also flooded with calls for justice, with community members demanding a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible. Vigil rallies were held to honor Crump's memory and to advocate for stronger action against crime.[16]

Funeral

Chantel Crump was buried on June 10, 2025 one day after she would have celebrated her 10th birthday.[17][18][19][20]
