On 30 August 2022, Mikhail Gorbachev, the eighth and final leader of the Soviet Union, died after a long illness at the Moscow Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow, Russia. Gorbachev became the last living Soviet leader following the death of Georgy Malenkov in 1988, and was the only one to have been born during its existence.
At the age of 91 years, Gorbachev is the longest-living ruler of Russia to date, having lived longer than Alexander Kerensky and Vasily Kuznetsov, who both died at 89 years old.[1][2]
Gorbachev's death provoked responses from many current and former world leaders and politicians.[3]
Background[edit]
Prior to his death, Gorbachev's health had deteriorated by 2020, with Gorbachev being put under continuous supervision by doctors since the beginning of 2020.[4]
Reactions[edit]
Domestic[edit]
Russian president Vladimir Putin expressed his "deepest condolences" to Gorbachev in the wake of his death, and announced that he would send a telegram of condolence to Gorbachev's family and friends.[5] State Duma deputy Vitaly Milonov was less positive in his outlook of Gorbachev, saying that Gorbachev was "worse than Hitler for Russia".[3]
International[edit]
Various foreign leaders and politicians offered condolences, including:
- Australia: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese; Treasurer Jim Chalmers[6][7]
- Austria: Chancellor Karl Nehammer[8]
- Canada: Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney[9]
- European Commission: President Ursula von der Leyen[10]
- European Parliament: President Roberta Metsola[11]
- France: President Emmanuel Macron[12]
- Ireland: Taoiseach Micheál Martin[13]
- Italy: Prime Minister Mario Draghi[14]; former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi[11]
- Netherlands: Prime Minister Mark Rutte[8]
- Spain: Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez;[15] Opposition Leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo[16]
- United States: President Joe Biden; former Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice, James Baker III, and Henry Kissinger[17][18][9][19]
- United Kingdom: Prime Minister Boris Johnson; Opposition Leader Keir Starmer[20][3]
- United Nations: Secretary General António Guterres[9]
Burial[edit]
Gorbachev is expected to be buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow next to his wife, Raisa Gorbacheva, according to his will.[21][22]
