Debadityo Sinha is an environmentalist and activist who is working for protection of environment and wildlife in Mirzapur region of Uttar Pradesh. He started Vindhya Bachao, a civil movement to protect the Vindhya Range and later founded Vindhyan Ecology and Natural History Foundation.

Mirzapur Thermal Power Plant[edit]

Debadityo Sinha opposed the 1320 MW coal-based thermal power plant proposed in the district Mirzapur of Uttar Pradesh questioning the siting of the project, and alleged that the company Welspun Energy wrongfully obtained the environmental clearance and concealing substantial information, mainly involvement of forests & wildlife.[1] In 2016, the Environmental Clearance granted to Welspun Energy for the proposed thermal power project was quashed by the National Green Tribunal in a litigation initiated by him on behalf of Vindhya Bachao. The Tribunal while setting aside the permission termed the entire Environmental Impact Assessment process as tainted.[2][3][4]

Kanhar Dam[edit]

Debadityo challenged the legal validity of the under-construction Kanhar dam in the district Sonbhadra of Uttar Pradesh claiming that it lacks the required Environment Clearance and Forest Clearance. The project was stayed by National Green Tribunal in December 2014. The project was later allowed after constituting a high-level committee. [5][6][7][8]

River Ganges and Waterways[edit]

Debadityo Sinha has criticized the government of India's plan for augmenting the National Waterway 1 on river Ganga by using any new hydro-engineering structures such as barrages.[9] He is part of the civil society delegation who are opposing the construction of barrages on River Ganga to augment the National Waterway 1.[10] [11]

Awards and Honours[edit]

Controversies[edit]

On 20 April 2015, Debadityo Sinha along with Kavita Krishnan, Abhishek Srivastava, Purnima Gupta and Priya Pillai was detained by Uttar Pradesh Police on their way to Kanhar dam in Sonbhadra district.[14] He was reportedly threatened of arresting by the police alleging him to be a Naxalite.[15] He was also attacked by a mob outside Dudhi hospital where they termed him and his team members as 'anti-dam' and demanded them to leave the district.[16]

On 18 June 2017 Debadityo Sinha along with other Vindhya Bachao members was reportedly harassed by the staff of Welspun Energy and a complaint was filed against him and his colleagues at Marihan Police Station of dacoity and robbing the security guard of the company at the project site in Mirzapur. However, Debadityo declined the allegations and claimed that he went to meet someone in village and the Welspun Energy staff has falsely implicated him with help of local police.[17][18] [19]
