Delta English School (DES) (in Arabic: مدرسة دلتا الإنجليزية) is an independent co-educational school located in Muwailih Commercial School District, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Founded in 1992, DES offers Central Board of Secondary Education curriculum for ages 5 to 18 (Kindergarten to Grade 10). Delta English School is owned and operated by Delta Education System (United States).[1]

Since its inception, Delta English School's curriculum centered around values-based education with a focus on Science, Math, Creative Arts and Cultural Appreciation. By 2010, Delta English School came under the management of Delta Education System - a K-12 educational management firm based in Houston, Texas (United States). Leveraging expertise of subject matter experts, curriculum designers and administrators, Delta Education System infuses 21st century teaching and learning resources into Delta English School that are ICT-centric, incorporate STEAM principles and align with global benchmarks.

History[edit]

Delta English School opened on May 16, 1992 serving children of ages 3 to 5 with grade levels added sequentially each year to accommodate up to age 17. The original campus was launched in Al Ghafiya, near Al Shaab Village. Admissions policies were designed up to bring in students from a diverse applicant pool. Delta English School's distinct learning programs and campus culture drew in students from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, United Kingdom, Philippines, Egypt, Lebanon, Nigeria, Tanzania, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates.[2] By 1995, Delta English School experienced rapid growth in student size and limited seating capacity, thereby prompting relocation to a bigger facility in Maysaloon at the intersection of Al Qasimi Street and S107 - Kuwait Street. Between 1996 and 1998, additional campus blocks were constructed within the proximity of the main building to house multiple Grade Level divisions. In 2009, Delta English School relocated to its custom-created campus in Muwailih Commercial where it continues to operate to this day.[3]

Campus[edit]

Delta English School's campus is centered in Muwailih Commercial School District, across from S116 - Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road and about 662 metres (2,172 ft) from the American University of Sharjah. From an aerial view, Delta English School is shaped as an inverted "E." The campus comprises of an administrative sector, a North Wing for Boy's Division, South Wing for Girl's Division and West Wing for laboratories and the main auditorium. Wings are identical in design to provide uniform learning layouts.

Each laboratory features individual lab stations with specialized apparatus, aqua points, water and gas lines and PC units for students to collaborate or work independently. Headed by Lab Technicians, all laboratories employ Occupational Safety and Health Administration Laboratories Standards, which includes lab safety training, Personal protective equipment, Material Safety data sheet, Chemical Hygiene Plans (CHP) and chemical disposal protocols.

Delta English School laboratories are open to all grade levels during school hours with a caveat that student users must be under supervision of a Science faculty member. As part of the school's STEAM fields curriculum to augment Science Process Skills, Middle and High School students are prompted to research trending Science topics within the laboratories and showcase their findings during the annual STEAM Fair.

Math Laboratory[edit]

While majority of Math lab sessions are held within classrooms, students are periodically scheduled to collaborate in the Math Laboratory. The lab features US-imported Math learning equipment which allow students to apply concepts in Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Modeling, Geometry, Statistics and Probability and Pre-Calculus.

ICT Laboratories[edit]

Delta English School's main technology commons area is the Zuse Micro PC Center named after German civil engineer and computer pioneer, Konrad Zuse. Supported by Information Technology Services (ITS) and open five days a week, the 30-computer station lab is a self-service facility for the entire school community. The lab is accessible during normal school hours unless reserved in advance for training and conferences. Lab staff on duty provide users assistance with available hardware and software. All computers are networked with high-speed internet connectivity and peripherals such as printers, scanners, microphones and cameras. Students use Zuse Micro PC Center to develop school projects involving desktop publishing, HTML 5 and CSS programming, Microsoft Access querying and audio-visual media editing.

Aside from Zuse Micro PC Center, ITS also provides user access to computer stations in designated locations across campus, namely the Ernest Hemingway Library and Science laboratories, each of which are equipped with generic and specialized software, laser printing and broadband connectivity.

Ernest's OneBook is organized in collaboration with the Department of English Language Arts and prompt students to read aloud and enact sections of the chosen book as well as discuss the author's motivation, underlying theme(s) and other literary properties associated with the work.

Additionally, the Department of English Language Arts plans to roll a comprehensive reading program in the 2017-2018 school year which will require every student to read two pre-selected, age-appropriate books per month and reflect on these works in assigned reading journals.

Osler Health Center[edit]

Osler Health Center delivers student health services as per international standards for school health care and mandates from the Ministry of Health (United Arab Emirates). Osler Health Center is staffed by board certified School Nurses and a contracted Primary Care Physician with board certification in General Medicine. Student medical records are maintained in accordance with applicable patient confidentiality laws. A Health Service Fee is billed at the beginning for each school year and covers services like clinic visits, blood pressure monitoring, physicals and Over-the-Counter (OTC) medications administered by School Nurses.

Well 360[edit]

Well 360 advocates for healthy lifestyle adoption by Delta English School students, faculty and staff. Programs offered through Well 360 include cardio protection, mental health strengthening, nutrition support, scheduled group exercises, and fitness road-maps to assess current Body-Mass Index and assist in remedial weight management. Well 360 is a joint collaboration between Osler Health Center and the Department of Athletics.

Health Lens Series[edit]

Launched in 2015, Health Lens Series is hosted by Osler Health Center and promotes the communication and awareness of recommended health practices that translate into academic success. To accomplish the health and wellness objectives, the Health Lens Series offers year-long seminars and interactive workshops conducted by healthcare and consumer well-being leaders, that include Dettol, Always, Unilever, Kellogg's and University of Sharjah Hospital.

Health Management[edit]

To protect the campus from communicable diseases (Varicella, Conjunctivitis, Influenza and Head Lice), Osler Health Center restricts infected students from attending school while the illness is still classified as contagious. An infected student is permitted to resume classes upon receiving medical clearance from his or her board certified primary care physician.

Osler Health Center requires all students to undergo routine annual physicals which are conducted on campus by the School Physician. Participation in physicals is required to maintain enrollment and register for school athletic programs.

Delta Store[edit]

All Delta English School course textbooks, course packets, required reading books, stationery, uniform, sportswear and Titan merchandise are sold at the Delta Store. Course textbooks and supplemental learning resources, used at Delta English School, are certified by the National Council of Educational Research and Training, Ministry of Education (United Arab Emirates) and UAE Ministry of Information and Culture. Apparel products are created to Delta Store's design standards, which includes fabric selection, style and comfort. All apparel undergo dual inspection, both at Delta Store's manufacturing facility and when products arrive at the Store.

The uniform and grooming standard for each student is strictly assessed against the DES Dress and Grooming Code (DGC) and factored into the student's 'Values and Attitudes' grade.

Outdoor Playing Fields[edit]

Delta English School has a large Outdoor Playing Field for the Boy's Division and a large Outdoor Playing Field for the Girl's Division. Both Playing Fields contain basketball and volleyball courts. Additional outdoor facilities include a football ground and Kinder Play Area featuring sand and water play, swing sets, slides and walking trails. Outdoor Playing Fields are used to host campus-wide assemblies, key ceremonies and Delta English School inter-house basketball, tennis, volleyball and football tournaments.

Academic Profile[edit]

Admission[edit]

In accordance with the Ministry of Education (United Arab Emirates), prospective students undergo two phases of the admissions process: Phase 1 - Registration and Phase 2 - Admission. Applications are accepted and reviewed between September and March, although applicants are encouraged to apply throughout the year with acceptance granted upon qualification and seat availability.

Admission to Delta English School is more selective in nature. All registered applicants must undertake PACE (Pre-Entrance Clearance Examination) to ascertain if they are academically qualified to enroll in the desired grade level at Delta English School. Applicants are then shortlisted based on achieved and predicted exam results, portfolio of previous extracurricular work, candidate-submitted written work and school references (if any). Approximately 60% of applicants are shortlisted in each admissions cycle, although this varies by year. The school then invite shortlisted candidates for interview to gauge their 21st-century skills, co-curricular interests and educational aspirations. All applicants will be individually interviewed by the Admissions and Review Council (ARC), who ultimately determines the applicant's outcome. Due to high demand, all DES classrooms reach 100% seating capacity per cycle (within the first four months of the seven-month admission period) and approximately 41% of applicants are waitlisted annually. Waitlisted applicants with low PACE scores may receive an "open offer" to enroll in a lower grade level or may be denied admission. ARC does not extend remote web-based interviews to shortlisted or selected waitlisted candidates, who reside outside the United Arab Emirates.

Teaching and learning[edit]

Since 1992, Delta English School is co-educational in nature from K1 to Grade Level 04 and segregated from Grade Level 05 and higher.
