Demetries A. Grimes
Commander Demetries A. Grimes USN (Ret.), born (November 16, 1965) in Greenfield, Indiana, is a second generation US military veteran and son of a Greek immigrant mother. He is fluent in Greek. He is also a graduate of Boston University and The London Business School, has completed Naval War College Postgraduate Studies in Strategy and War and National Decision-making, and is a former Secretary of Defense Fellow.
He recently retired from the US Navy as a Commander with more than 25 years of active duty service that included 7 deployments (5 deployments with more than 100 combat missions/2000 hours in the E-2 Hawkeye aircraft operating from aircraft carriers). He was deployed to and operated ashore from Panama, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Other assignments include diplomatic assignments as the US Naval Attaché to Greece and US Naval Attaché to Israel. He served at the White House (Clinton), in Headquarters staff assignments at the Pentagon and NATO, with Combined Joint Inter-agency Task Force 435 Afghanistan, as Executive Officer/Deputy Commander of the US strategic forward operating base in Crete, and Advisor to NATO’s Maritime Forces Commander in London.
He serves on the Executive Board, Association of the US Army, Hellenic Chapter and his affiliations include The Army and Navy Club, Washington DC, The Army and Navy Club, London, Society of White House Military Aides, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is a democratic candidate in South Florida's 26th congressional district.
Early life
As with any military family - home was where they were sent. They were transferred about every three years; Great Lakes, Newport Rhode Island & Athens Greece where Demetries attended third and fourth grades at the American Community School (ACS); then Charleston, South Carolina, where he attended Holy Trinity. After his father’s retirement from the US Navy the family moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Demetries was sent to Kifissia to attend TASIS Greece, where he would attend Agios Andreas in Galatsi. Before Demetries left for college, the family settled in Florida.
Education
Commander Grimes is a graduate of London Business School, Executive MBA Class of 2017 and Boston University, with a B.A. in International Relations. He was commissioned as an Ensign following graduation from Aviation Officer Candidate School at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. He earned his “wings of gold” as a Naval Flight Officer in the E2C Hawkeye Command and Control Aircraft. He is also a graduate of the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Advanced Mission Commander Course and Defense Intelligence Agency Joint Military Attaché School. He has completed Naval War College post graduate studies in National Security Decision Making and in Strategy and War.
Commander Grimes graduated from Boston University, with a B.A. in International Relations.

Military career
CDR Grimes’ operational assignments include various leadership positions in aircraft carrier-based E-2C Hawkeye Command and Control and Reconnaissance flying squadrons. He has completed seven deployments, five from forward deployed aircraft carriers. CDR Grimes has logged more than 100 combat missions and more than 2000 flight hours in the E-2C Hawkeye aircraft. He has also deployed to and operated ashore from Panama, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Greece, Cyprus, Israel, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
CDR Grimes’ shore assignments include positions in Washington, DC and overseas in senior staff, program management, NATO, and diplomatic leadership and advisor positions. He has served as a Program Manager and Action Officer on the Chief of Naval Operations Aviation Manpower, Training and Readiness Staff at the Pentagon, White House Aide for President Clinton, Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander, USS CONSTELLATION STRIKE GROUP in San Diego, CA, E2C Aircraft Tactics Training Officer and Naval Flight Officer instructor at VAW 120 Flying Squadron at Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Virginia. Selected as a Secretary of Defense Corporate Fellow, CDR Grimes completed his Fellowship assignment in the Global Government Operations and Industry Solutions Divisions at NCR Corporation Headquarters in New York City.
CDR Grimes has served overseas as Plans and Programs Officer, NATORussia Programs Officer, Deputy, Joint Operations Center at NATO Joint Command South Center, and Navy Programs Director at the Office of Defense Cooperation at the US Embassy in Athens, Greece. His diplomatic assignments include tours as US Naval Attaché to Greece and US Naval Attaché to Israel. In Spring 2011, CDR Grimes completed a deployment to Parwan, Afghanistan in support of Combined Joint InterAgency Task Force FOUR THREE FIVE. Prior to arriving at NATO Headquarters, Allied Maritime Command, UK, CDR Grimes served as Deputy Commander/Executive Officer of the US Navy forward operating base at Souda Bay, on the island of Crete, Greece.
