Demons Roots (stylized as "DemonsRoots" in Japan) is an eroge turn-based role-playing game created and developed by Japanese author Akai Mato. The game was initially released in Japan in 2021, with an international release following in 2023. The game serves as a prequel to KingExit, released in Japan in 2016. The game centers around Deathpolca, a female demon with machinations to conquer the human world and usher in demonic rule, avenging the defeat of the Demon Lord from centuries ago.

Gameplay

The mechanics of the game's main quest largely take inspiration from classic Turn-based RPGs, featuring town and dungeon field maps, a battle screen, and a menu screen for characters, skills, and items.

Optional game areas, such as a hedonistic kingdom devoted to lust and a game over torture dungeon, draw on gacha game and puzzle game mechanics, respectively. It is in these areas where much of the game's eroge content lies.

Plot

Setting

The game takes place on an unnamed continent encircled by thick mountain ranges inhabited by deadly beasts. The various kingdoms of the continent are allowed to rule by the grace of the Emperor, who is seated in the continent's north.

The continent's many kingdoms take inspiration from medieval fantasy aesthetics. Though, mysterious persons and objects from outside realities (known as "Aubades") lend contemporary and sci-fi elements to the game's fantasy setting.

Story

The game begins with a celebration in the Kingdom of Bohelos which is meant to honor the kingdom's founder and namesake, Saint Bohelos. During the celebration, demonkind launches an assault on the unsuspecting kingdom. Leading the offense are the Apostles, powerful followers of the Demon Lord that had ruled the continent before his defeat at the hands of humanity a millennium ago. Deathpolca, a demon with a human-like appearance, defeats and captures the kingdom's royalty, gaining the demons a valuable foothold in their bid to conquer the world of man.
