Denise Nicoletti
Denise Wawrzynski Nicoletti (died July 22, 2002[1]) was an American academic and professor of Electrical Engineering.[2] She was the first tenure-track female faculty member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in 1991 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. She was an expert on ultrasonics[3], nondestructive testing, and scaling and fractal properties. In 1997, along with Professor Chrysanthe Demetry of the Mechanical Engineering Department at WPI, she helped found Camp Reach. This is a well-respected program designed to introduce a passion and interest in engineering and science to seventh grade girls. In 1998, she created Women in Electrical and Computer Engineering (WECE), which is an organization that supports female ECE students at WPI.
Career
Nicoletti received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University.[2] She was hired to a tenure-track faculty position in Electrical and Computer Engineering at WPI in 1991.[2] She was the only female faculty member in this department. Nicoletti was a co-founder of Camp Reach[4] at WPI and director of the program from 1997-2002.[5] Funding for the program came from a National Science Foundation grant entitled Model Projects for Women and Girls.[5] Nicoletti was the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on grants leading to over a million dollars in funding from the National Science Foundation for projects related to improving student learning outcomes by utilizing better assessment tools in the ECE department[6][7] and developing a K-12 engineering curriculum.[5] Additionally, she authored a handbook on maternity leave for faculty colleagues.
Honors and awards
The Denise Nicoletti Trustees' Award for Service to Community is an annual award given to members of the WPI community who "best embody Nicoletti's spirit of service."[2]
