Dennis P. Wiser (born February 24, 1950) is an American politician who currently serves as the interim mayor of Racine, Wisconsin. He has previously served as an alderman on the Racine Common Council, and as a representative on the school board of the Racine Unified School District. Wiser was appointed mayor on July 18, 2017.[1]
Early life[edit]
Wiser was born in 1950 and grew up in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. He graduated from Fort Atkinson Senior High School in 1968, then earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1972. He later received his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.[2] Wiser has lived in Racine since 1973. He worked for the Racine Unified School District as a mathematics teacher at Jerome I. Case High School for thirty-four years.[3] As a teacher, he chaired the Welfare Committee of the Racine Education Association, the teachers' union of Racine, and later served as its president for five years.[4] He participated in a district-wide teachers' strike in 1977.[5]
After retiring from teaching, Wiser ran for a seat on the Racine Board of Education in 2008 and won. He later became an alderman in 2010, representing the 10th district on the Racine Common Council. He continues to hold seats on both of these boards simultaneously, and briefly held a third concurrent position on the board of the Racine Public Library. Between 2012 and 2015, he was president of the school board. In 2015, he became president of the Racine Common Council, a position which succeeds the mayor in case of resignation.[2][6]
Mayoralty[edit]
Wiser became mayor of Racine on July 16, 2017, following the resignation of his predecessor, John Dickert, who became the executive director of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative. The common council voted unanimously to officially appoint him to the position on July 18, and tentatively announced that a special election would be held on October 17, 2017. According to their schedule, Wiser will step down for the newly elected mayor on November 7.[1] Wiser has stated that he has no plans to run in the special election, and will return to his previous position at the end of his term.[7]
